Voters will blame Trump, Republicans for shutting down their own government, poll shows

Campaign Action According to polling commissioned by MoveOn.org Civic Action, Center for American Progress Action Fund, and Service Employees International Union (SEIU), voters in Senate battleground states will blame Donald Trump and the GOP if their failure to govern despite controlling the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate leads to a shutdown: “By an 11-point margin, voters believe intuitively—even before hearing any specific policy disagreements—that Donald Trump and congressional Republicans (42%) will be more to blame than Democrats (31%) if a shutdown occurs. Considering that Donald Trump carried these states by an average margin of 11 points, this extraordinary result reflects voters’ understanding that Republican leaders are far more willing than Democrats to cause a shutdown.” These voters say that long-term legislation funding the government must include permanent protections for the 800,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients who will face loss of their work permits, driver’s licenses, and protection from deportation following Trump announcing the end of the program last September: “Fully 81% of battleground voters say a budget agreement should prevent the deportation of Dreamers by granting them legal status to remain in the country. … Support for protections is nearly as strong in red states, which voted for both Romney and Trump (79%), as in purple states that went for Obama and Trump (82%).” And, 57 percent of those polled “oppose including funding for President Trump’s proposed wall on the Mexican border in a budget agreement, while just 41% favor it … even in a sample dominated by states won by Trump, 55% of voters disapprove of the Trump-GOP insistence on funding the border wall as a precondition for providing DACA protections.” “This polling makes clear that if Trump shuts down the government while holding Dreamers hostage in exchange for advancing his racist policies, including the border wall, Trump and the Republican Party will be held responsible by the majority of voters in key states,” said MoveOn.org’s Ilya Sheyman. “Democrats must stand united in rejecting any temporary spending measures until Dreamers are protected, which the public overwhelmingly wants to see happen.”

Release of ancient methane due to changing climate kept in check by ocean waters

Ocean sediments are a massive storehouse for the potent greenhouse gas methane. But methane only acts as a greenhouse gas if and when it reaches the atmosphere. Environmental scientists recently set out to discover whether or not this ancient-sourced methane, which is released due to warming ocean waters, survives the journey from the seafloor and reaches the atmosphere.

Warriors rookie Jordan Bell taken off court in wheelchair

The opening seconds of the Golden State Warriors game against the Chicago Bulls were marred by an injury. Golden State rookie Jordan Bell went up in an attempt block a dunk from Chicago’s Robin Lopez. As Bell came to the ground, he landed with all of his weight on his left leg. Bell tried to limp off the court with help of his team’s medical staff, but couldn’t make it. The Warriors were already shorthanded on Wednesday, playing without Andre Iguodala and Draymond Green, the latter of which Bell was replacing in the starting lineup.

Austin Rivers reportedly cleared air with Trevor Ariza, has yet to with Chris Paul

Cooler heads finally appear to be prevailing (at least to some extent) amidst the hostilities between the LA Clippers and the Houston Rockets.Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported on Wednesday that Clippers guard Austin Rivers and Rockets forward Trevor Ariza spoke to each other shortly after their postgame incident earlier this week in order to work out their differences. Shelburne does add however that Rivers has yet to reach a resolution with his former teammate, Rockets guard Chris Paul. Punishments for the incident were handed down by the league on Wednesday with Ariza and Gerald Green drawing two-game suspensions, but no other members of the Rockets or the Clippers being disciplined. It’s a bit surprising to hear that some of the tensions died down this quickly, especially after what we learned about Ariza’s role in the skirmish. Nevertheless though, it sounds like things are still pretty frosty between the two ex-mates Rivers and Paul.
