Sugar tax, weak sales cited as Seprod temporarily lays off 141 workers
The additional cost of sugar-based juices as a result of the “sugar tax” is among the reasons the Seprod Group says is behind a decision to temporarily lay off 141 workers. Finance Minister Fayval Williams announced the tax during her Budget presentation earlier this year. Under the regime, beverages with zero added sugar incur no tax, while drinks with added sugar are taxed proportionally by weight.
