Bagbin re-inaugurates African Commission of Health and Human Rights Promoters with GH¢100,000 donation
Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Bagbin, has formally re-inaugurated the African Commission of Health and Human Rights Promoters and launched its Endowment Fund with a personal contribution of GH¢100,000. The event, held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra on Thursday, September 17, marked the revival of the Commission, which is seeking to renew its work around healthcare rights, human dignity, accountability and the protection of vulnerable and marginalised groups. The Commission’s founder, Naa Professor Edmund Nminyem Delle, said its origins date back to 1989, when it was established to respond to human rights concerns surrounding HIV/AIDS and discrimination against people living with the disease. Professor Delle said its work later expanded to supporting people fleeing persecution and torture, including journalists and others who sought refuge in Ghana. However, he said the organisation’s activities eventually slowed because of financial constraints, prompting efforts to establish a new foundation for its work.
