2 arrested at Tuas Checkpoint for attempting to smuggle over 10kg of cannabis into Singapore
Two Malaysians were arrested at Tuas Checkpoint on Tuesday (Sept 15) for attempting to smuggle drugs into Singapore.The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Friday that the 36-year-old man and 35-year-old woman arrived at the checkpoint in a Malaysia-registered motorcycle.They were directed to undergo enhanced checks based on information received from ICA's Integrated Targeting Centre (ITC).The ITC operates 24/7 and leverages data analytics to conduct pre-arrival risk assessment of travellers, conveyances and cargo.Those assessed to be of higher risk are flagged for checks upon arrival at Singapore's checkpoints. According to ICA, its search and examination officers found four bundles of vegetable matter believed to be controlled drugs underneath the motorcycle seat.Following the discovery, officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) were alerted and a subsequent search uncovered a further six bundles in a black haversack on the motorcycle's handlebar.ICA said the 10 bundles were found to contain more than 10kg of cannabis, with an estimated value of over $203,000.
