For decades, the story of healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa has been a race against supply chains. While global scientific innovation has turned conditions like HIV from terminal diagnoses into manageable illnesses, the physical reality of getting those treatments to the people who need them remains precarious. Sub-Saharan Africa bears more than half of the global burden of people living with HIV who lack access to life-saving antiretroviral therapy. Yet, the region imports roughly 80 to 90 percent of its pharmaceutical products.
