Saudi Arabia launches first internationally accredited guide for vulture feeding stations
RIYADH — The National Center for Wildlife (NCW) announced on Sunday Saudi Arabia’s first internationally accredited national guide for vulture feeding stations, aimed at protecting resident and migratory vultures. In addition to protecting vultures, the guide aims to reduce the risk of poisoning, one of the most significant threats to their survival and population sustainability. Developed in cooperation with five specialized international organizations, the guide draws on global best practices and expertise in vulture and raptor conservation while taking into account the environmental and logistical conditions of Saudi Arabia’s arid regions. The guide provides a comprehensive framework for establishing and managing feeding stations, known as “vulture restaurants,” which offer safe and controlled food sources. The stations are designed to reduce vultures’ exposure to toxins, harmful veterinary drugs and other pollutants, while supporting their survival and reproduction in their natural habitats. They will also provide safe feeding points for migratory vultures crossing Saudi Arabia along seasonal migration routes before continuing their journeys. The guide also sets out technical and operational requirements for the stations, including site selection, safe food sources, operating procedures, and the monitoring and documentation of vulture numbers and behavior. These measures will help assess the stations’ impact and enhance their effectiveness as a conservation tool.
