Prague to Add 51 New Trams Next Year as Network Expands
<p>Prague is set to receive 51 new trams next year as the city expands its tram network and begins replacing some of its oldest vehicles. The Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) has ordered another 25 Škoda 52T trams under an existing framework agreement with Škoda Transportation. Each tram costs CZK 82.5 million, including CZK 40 million in European subsidies. Prague has now committed to buying 71 of the new vehicles in three separate orders. The first 20 Škoda 52T trams entered regular service in Prague last year. Another batch is being delivered this year, while the latest orders will continue into 2027. The newest order for 25 additional trams is due to be completed by December 3 next year. The new vehicles are needed not only because Prague is building new tram lines but also because the existing fleet needs to be renewed. Some of the oldest trams still in operation are the T3M models, while a large part of the fleet consists of reconstructed T3R.P and T3R.PV vehicles and their derivatives. Replacing older models with a smaller number of standardised tram types should also reduce maintenance and servicing costs, according to the deputy mayor.
