Police launch single caller ID 6000 0999 to fight government official impersonation scams
As part of the Government's ongoing efforts to strengthen safeguards against government official impersonation scams (GOIS), the police will be the first Government agency to launch a single, prefixed number — 6000 0999 — starting Nov 2.In a joint media release by the Ministry of Digital Development and Information, Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore, Open Government Products and the police on Sunday (Nov 1), they said the initiative was developed through a multi-agency effort by them.It is aimed at helping members of the public identify legitimate calls from Government agencies more easily, and better protect them against scams that involve the impersonation of Government officials.Outgoing calls from Government agencies are currently made using different phone numbers, including officials' office landlines and official mobile phones, making it difficult for members of the public to recognise and trust legitimate Government calls, and creates opportunities for scammers to impersonate officials.
