New invasive ant species detected in Israel for the first time in Haifa
The Environmental Protection Ministry has identified the African big-headed ant for the first time in the Neve Sha’anan neighborhood of Haifa. The species is considered one of the world’s 100 most harmful invasive species. Reports of its presence in other parts of the city are also being investigated. The ministry is working with the Haifa Municipality, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, and Tel Aviv University to expand monitoring efforts and examine pest-control solutions suited to Israeli conditions. “The public is asked to report any suspected sightings to help map infestation hotspots and prevent the spread of this invasive species," the ministry said.
