Türkiye’s renewable energy growth cuts fossil fuel imports and emissions
The capacity growth Türkiye has achieved in solar and wind energy over the past decade has made a significant contribution to replacing fossil fuels in electricity generation. According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, a total of 442.2 terawatt-hours of electricity was generated from solar and wind sources between 2015 and 2025. This generation prevented the need for $21.5 billion in coal imports that would have been required if the same amount of electricity had been generated using imported coal. Thus, renewable energy sources contributed not only to electricity generation but also to reducing energy imports.
