Maxine Wong clinches bronze, becomes third Singaporean to win individual Asian Games fencing medal
Singaporean fencer Maxine Wong won her first individual medal at the Asian Games on Wednesday (Sept 23), becoming the third Singaporean fencer to claim an individual podium finish at the competition. The 25-year-old secured a bronze medal after reaching the semi-finals at Aichi Sky Expo, where she lost 15-6 to Japan's Yuka Ueno.Ueno will face South Korea's Park Ji-hee in the final after Park defeated Uzbekistan's Polina Volobueva 15-12 in the other semi-final.Wong had earlier booked her place in the last four with a 15-6 victory over Hong Kong's Daphne Chan in the quarter-finals.She began her campaign by advancing from the pools with three wins in five bouts.Wong then defeated the Philippines' Jana Allysah Catantan 15-2 in the table of 32 before edging China's reigning champion Huang Qianqian 12-10 in the table of 16.The bronze marks Wong's second Asian Games medal. She made her Asian Games debut in Jakarta in 2018, where she won bronze in the women's team foil event and finished fifth in the individual competition.
