One-third of voters say President Biden’s election was illegitimate, according to a new poll released Tuesday marking an increase from the same poll in 2021.
The Washington Post/University of Maryland poll found that 36% of voters surveyed say Mr. Biden was not legitimately elected president, while 62% say he was fairly elected.
In 2021, a Washington Post/University of Maryland poll revealed that 29% of voters said Mr. Biden’s election was unlawful, and 69% said he was rightfully elected.
Among Republicans, 31% say the 2020 election results were fair, down from 49% two years earlier.
Among Democrats, 91% say Mr. Biden was properly elected, slightly down from 94% who said that in 2021, while 66% of independents say he was rightfully elected compared with 72% in December 2021.
One-third of respondents, 33%, say there is “solid evidence” of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election compared with 63% who said there was “no solid evidence.” That marks a slight dip from 2021 when 30% of voters said there was “solid evidence” of widespread voter fraud and 68% who said there was “no solid evidence” of fraud.
The poll found that among respondents who get their information from Fox News, only 30% said Mr. Biden’s election was legitimate.
Former President Donald Trump, who is the GOP front-runner for the 2024 presidential nomination, says he won the 2020 election, a claim backed by footage in the “2000 Mules” movie that shows massive ballot stuffing for Mr. Biden. Otherwise, numerous audits and court cases have failed to prove allegations of fraud.
The Washington Post/University of Maryland poll was conducted Dec. 14-18 among 1,024 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
