Mets could hold edge over Blue Jays in George Springer sweepstakes for specific reason

The New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays are the two most likely destinations for free-agent outfielder George Springer. However, one team holds the edge over the other.

According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Mets hold an advantage over the Blue Jays because Springer prefers to play closer to Connecticut, his home state.

Springer would be a solid addition for the Mets, who are looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016. The 31-year-old hit 14 homers and drove in 32 runs while slashing .265/.359/.540 last season for the Astros. In seven seasons with Houston, Springer was a three-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger and was named World Series MVP in 2017.

If the Mets do end up signing him, the team could end up moving Jeff McNeil back to second base, where he played in 2018 before New York acquired Robinson Cano, who now is suspended for the entire 2021 season due to a performance-enhancing drug violation.

The Mets have been one of the busiest and most aggressive teams this offseason under new owner Steven Cohen. New York acquired shortstop Francisco Lindor and pitcher Carlos Carrasco from Cleveland and has also signed catcher James McCann and reliever Trevor May. The Mets have also been linked to closer Brad Hand.

Meanwhile, Toronto has been linked to just about every high-end free agent this winter. The Blue Jays front office vowed to bring in some superstar talent, but has been unable to do so thus far. The offseason has been quiet for most teams, though, but things should pick up with spring training quickly approaching.
