USWNT midfielder Sam Mewis agrees to deal with Manchester City, will leave NWSL

United States Women's National Team midfielder Sam Mewis is leaving the NWSL.

Manchester City have signed Mewis on a permanent deal from the North Carolina Courage, the club announced Monday. The Courage will retain her NWSL rights. 

The length of the deal hasn't been revealed, though ESPN's sources say Mewis will remain with the club for the "foreseeable future."

Mewis is a three-time NWSL champion, winning one title with the Western New York Flash in 2016 and the Courage in back-to-back years in 2018 and 2019. 

The 27-year-old played in six of the USWNT's seven games en route to a World Cup title in 2019. She scored two goals against Thailand in a 13-0 victory. 

Manchester City finished second in the Women's Super League this season before it was canceled in May due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

City already boasts some of soccer's most talented women, including Ellen White and Jill Scott. 

Mewis and Manchester City will kick of the 2020-21 campaign against Aston Villa on Sept. 6.
