Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk set to be announced PFA Player of the Year - reports

Liverpool's Dutch defensive colossus Virgil van Dijk will be unveiled as the 2018-19 PFA Player of the Year, according to reports in the English press.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, van Dijk pipped Manchester City and England forward Raheem Sterling to the award, which is voted on annually by the players themselves as part of their union, the Professional Footballers' Association.

Unsurprisingly, the six-man shortlist for the award was filled with players from the two clubs chasing the 2018-19 Premier League title.

Manchester City were represented by Sterling, Sergio Aguero and Bernado Silva, whole Liverpool were represented by van Dijk and Sadio Mane. Rounding out the list was Chelsea's Belgian playmaker Eden Hazard.

Van Dijk arrived at Anfield in January 2018 for $97 million - a world-record fee for a defender - and has been a shining light at the heart of Liverpool's defence ever since.

The Dutch international is now widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world, and his fellow professionals have reportedly shown their admiration for the Liverpool star's performances by voting them their players' player of the year.
