On Jan. 22, 2003, the crew of Space Shuttle Columbia captured this sunrise from the crew cabin during Flight Day 7. The mission lifted off on Jan. 16 on the first Shuttle mission of the year, carrying seven crew members on a marathon international scientific research flight.

On Feb. 1, after completing a successful 16-day mission, Columbia and her crew were lost during reentry over East Texas at about 9 a.m. EST, 16 minutes before the scheduled touchdown.

NASA will honor the crew of Space Shuttle Columbia and all those who lost their lives while furthering the cause of exploration and discovery, including the crews of Apollo 1 and Space Shuttle Challenger, during the agency’s annual Day of Remembrance Thursday, Feb. 7. Read the press release.
