It appears that White House staff's strategy of lying to Individual 1 about his ability to use the whole government as his slush fund has distracted him from demanding his $5 billion wall money. Wednesday morning he triumphantly tweeted "One way or the other, we will win on the Wall!" and the way apparently will be "the United States Military will build the Wall!" Wait until he finds out he can't do it.
But for now it seems that he believes he's saving face so has backed down on the shutdown, probably? Spokesghoul Kellyanne Conway says he's just waiting to see what reaches his desk and "he's willing to do what he has to do to get that border security, including a government shutdown," but will certainly consider the possibility of a short term continuing resolution lasting into February. More specifically Press Secretary Sarah Sanders went on Fox news and said, in essence, they're still distracting Trump by "exploring other ways to obtain $5 billion for the wall, rather than getting it from Congress."
Congress won't like that, and the days of Congress rolling over for him are over with Democrats ready to take over the House in a few weeks. But apparently the White House staff have decided that that's a fight for next year. Meanwhile, congressional Republicans are sending the subtle message to Trump that he's on his own if indeed he changes his mind and refuses to sign whatever they give him before midnight Friday. “I think there’s certainly bipartisan support for avoiding a government shutdown,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. "He [Trump] can speak for himself, but I think a government shutdown is not a good option."
Meanwhile, House Republican leadership is AWOL. They're finally returning to "work" Wednesday afternoon, some of them anyway. It seems that they'll just go along with whatever the Senate does because there just isn't any stomach for defeated Republicans to show up and fight.
