WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) - Authorities have found the body of a Maryland hiker who went missing while he was celebrating his honeymoon on Molokai island.
Stephen Kramar’s body was found Friday by a volunteer assisting with the search in an area called Pia Gulch, about a half-mile (805 meters) northeast of the Wavecrest Resort, Maui officials said.
The body was positively identified by Kramar’s family members.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine his exact cause of death.
Kramar, 27, and his wife, Jeffanie, were in Hawaii celebrating their honeymoon after getting married Sept. 8 in Virginia.
Kramar set on a hike on Monday, hoping to chart a trail to make sure it was safe enough for his wife. He sent her a text later that day saying he was on his way back, but he never made it.
“We saw the east side for the first time, and Stephen just was dazzled seeing the mountain,” Jeffanie Kramar told Hawaii News Now earlier this week. “He’s an avid hiker, so he’s hiked a few mountains before. Most of them, though, were snow-capped mountains.”
A fire department crew of at least 12 firefighters had been searching for Kramar on foot while the fire department’s Air One helicopter searched from above.
They were joined by Police Special Response Team members and a police tracking dog.
Several local volunteers independently assisted with their own searches, police said.
