It’s not true that Donald Trump completely lacks sympathy. He feels very bad—for Donald Trump. In an overnight interview with Hill.TV, Trump revealed the sad, sad hole in the heart of his regime.
Trump: I don’t have an attorney general. It’s very sad.
See? Sad. It wasn’t the only thing dampening Trump’s solar eclipse viewers. There’s more that’s harshing Trump’s buzz, beyond the cursed inevitable betrayal of Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III. He’s also not happy with how Sessions is handling things “at the border” and “not happy with numerous things.” Yes, he’s not happy that the government has only managed to lose another 1,500 children. Sessions is just not losing them fast enough.
Trump: I’m so sad over Jeff Sessions because he came to me. He was the first senator that endorsed me. And he wanted to be attorney general, and I didn’t see it.
So damn sad. Trump couldn’t see that Sessions, who was involved in his campaign and in his transition, and who met at least three times with the Russian ambassador, would recuse himself from an investigation about meetings between Trump’s campaign and transition team and Russian officials. Just because he’s neck-deep in the crime is no reason that Sessions shouldn’t hold the strings on the investigation. In fact, for Trump that’s exactly why Sessions should have kept his fingers on the button.
Trump: We’ll see how it goes with Jeff. I’m very disappointed in Jeff. Very disappointed.
And sad. Don’t forget sad.
Trump’s lengthy rant on Sessions included, as it always does, multiple hints that he intends to fire the attorney general. But there’s really not much point in hinting since Republicans have made it clear that they’ll go along with punting Sessions to the circular file as soon as the polls close on Election Day. In fact, Trump surely has Steven Miller working up an election night speech to blame Sessions for any Republican losses as he kicks him out the door.
There’s without a doubt a big file on special counsel Robert Mueller’s desk with Sessions’ name on it. A file thick enough that Sessions had considered checking to see if that Keebler tree has an extradition treaty with the United States. Because he’s in the investigation up to his neck, and back at the outset of this thing, he had the impression that … it mattered.
Trump never had that impression. He’s shocked that anyone did.
Trump: He gets in and probably because of the experience that he had going through the nominating when somebody asked him the first question about Hillary Clinton or something he said ‘I recuse myself, I recuse myself.’
Or something. It’s all just … sad.
Trump: And now it turned out he didn’t have to recuse himself. Actually, the FBI reported shortly thereafter any reason for him to recuse himself. And it’s very sad what happened.
Dammit. I said it was sad.
