California businessman and Trump-endorsed GOP candidate for California’s gubernatorial race, John Cox is in some deep doo doo. Thursday Cox made some doo doo remarks during a campaign stop to a California DMV, as reported by Capital Public Radio.
“You know, I met a Holocaust survivor in Long Beach. He survived concentration camps, and he said this was worse. He’s 90 years old and he had to wait four hours down in Long Beach. Can you imagine that?” Cox says.
Cox was trying to play an everyman of sorts, and do what Republicans and fascists have always done, tell the “common folks,” that they will “make the trains run on time.” Cox is running against Democrat Gavin Newsome and this won’t help. Cox’s campaign made sure to explain that while John Cox said that the lines at the DMV were worse than the lines to (maybe?) concentration camps, he wasn’t saying that the Holocaust was worse than the DMV.
“John isn’t saying it was worse than the Holocaust. The guy didn’t say it was worse than the Holocaust,” [Campaign spokesman Matt] Shupe said. “He was saying that it reminded him of pre-war Germany” when Jews had to wait in lines to be processed.”
“In no way does he mean this as a slight to the Jewish community,” Shupe added. “He misspoke. It’s very unfortunate. But it’s nothing more than that.”
Yup. We all know he probably didn’t actually mean to come across the way he came across, but you’re running for goddamn governor of the fifth or six largest economy of the world, man! Also, Trump endorsing you, and you accepting that endorsement means, by definition, that you are complicit in not only treason, but are complicit in racist and anti-Semitic sentiments and behaviors.
