America's Dumbest Congressman took to a House Judiciary Committee microphone today to offer up the most Dumbliest of all possible both-sides takes to Russian election interference. According to Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert, this is all normal. Terribly normal. Why if anything, it's a little suspicious we're all of a sudden trying to stop it just because they helped a Republican.
“It’s been going on for 70 years,” he said. “It helped Truman get elected in ’48. Eisenhower called the Russians on it in ’56 and manipulation there.”
Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev bragged about throwing the election to President John F. Kennedy in 1960 and Russia helped Jimmy Carter’s election in 1976, Gohmert said.
“So I am thrilled that we are going to get help across the aisle to get to the Russian input stopped,” he said.
Oh yeah well what about Harry Truman is the hot Republican take on Russian government efforts to install Donald Trump our nation was waiting for. I'm not sure even the grinding cogs of Sean Hannity's mind could think up that one. It's not quite Tucker Carlson's effort, publicly hollering that it's actually Mexico that's been tampering with our elections because Americans with Mexican heritage keep stubbornly insisting on voting even though Tucker's racist fanbase gets all a-vapored by them doing that, but it gets high marks for the suggestion that maybe Russia has been in league with Democrats all along, the sneaky bastards.
Louie Gohmert has a history of repeating things he gleaned from conservative conspiracy acolytes, but this may be the last stop for Gohmert, before he ends up at his inevitable future assertion that well of course Donald Trump's campaign was actively conspiring with Russia but there's nothing wrong with that, because Freedom. You know it, I know it, we all know he'll get there, and he won’t be the only one. There ain’t no bottom there.
