Tata Motors applies brake on Indigo, Indica production?

The then chariman Ratan Tata famously promised customers that the new cars will have the dimensions of a Maruti Zen, the cabin size of an Ambassador and the fuel efficiency of a Maruti 800

Tata Motors is phasing out the Indica and Indigo as consumers have moved on to trendier models offered in the market.

According to an Economic Times report, a Tata Motors dealer said that the company has stopped the production of the two models and will be supplying the last few cars.

The report states that a Tata Motors spokesperson confirmed the development.

The Indica was launched in 1998, and the Indigo was released in 2002, nearly two decades ago. These were the first models that marked Tata Motor’s entry into the domestic vehicles segment.

Sales numbers from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) suggest that the Indica and the Indigo eCS were declining. Only 2,583 units of the Indica and 1,756 units of Indigo were sold in FY18. The company did not reveal its April 2018 sales on the two models.

Tata Motors sold 1,87,321 in FY18, a growth of 22 percent as opposed to the 1,53,151 units in the same period last year. The newly-launched Nexon, Hexa, and hatchback Tiago were the key drivers in growth.

The spokesperson mentioned that the necessary service support will still be provided to Indica and Indigo owners.

Before the launch of the Indica, the then chariman Ratan Tata famously promised customers a car with the dimensions of a Maruti Zen, the cabin size of an Ambassador and the fuel efficiency of a Maruti 800. The car managed to secure 1 lakh bookings.

Industry experts believe that Tata Motors is set to launch new offering this year and the next.
