WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Three Kansas counties will be hosting special events for residents to participate in activities and meet local authors and artists.

Kiowa, Comanche and Barber counties will host the Big Kansas Road Trip, The Wichita Eagle reported . The event will be held over four days from May 3-6.

Attendees will have the opportunity to eat pie, ride a carousel, have cookies with Carry Nation, visit buffalo, walk in a meteorite field and sit in a round barn.

“So the idea is instead of everybody coming together to go booth to booth, they will be eating at cafes, shopping in stores and driving the scenic roads,” said Marci Penner, executive director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, which has oversees the event.

Dave Webb is one of the coordinators of the weekend. He says the event gives residents a chance “to get out and see some of the unique attraction.”

The event is taking the place of the traveling Kansas Sampler Festival, which has ended after nearly 30 years.

Penner said she hopes the trip will help build bridges between urban and rural residents.

“I think we are providing an easy pathway for people who haven’t been to this area to get to know the land and people,” Penner said. “As we have prepared for this weekend, the charm of the people who live here has me all excited, especially with the things they are willing to do to lay out the red carpet. This truly is an open house in three counties.”
