Senate Democrats appear poised to vote for a continuing resolution bill that will reopen the government through February 8 but fails to address protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. All Senate Democrats have is yet another false promise from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to continue some sort of immigration talks, with no assurances House Speaker Paul Ryan will do the same.
The fact is that over 16,000 DACA recipients have already lost their work permits and protections from deportation, and every day that the Republican-led Congress refuses to act on permanent legislation, another 122 fall out of status. McConnell can keep repeating this lie that Congress has until March to act all he likes, but it will keep staying a lie:
Further delay until February 8 means another 2,200 DACA recipients will fall out of status and risk being torn from the only country they’ve ever known as home. Now to put the lives of thousands of young immigrants, like Juan, in the hands of a man as bankrupt as Mitch McConnell is a horrific thought.
