At this point in the COVID-19 pandemic, with Donald Trump’s name and actions hanging over us and the work of preparing for midterm elections already underway, many of us are eager to celebrate some good news. Luckily, as of Thursday afternoon, gig workers have a legitimate victory to celebrate in New York City. Even better? That victory can very much be credited to workers themselves, including immigrants. As Daily Kos has covered, we know that the pandemic sent many people inside as much as possible, as folks tried to stay home and stay safe. For some people, say, older folks and people who are immunocompromised, avoiding places like the grocery store, pharmacy, and restaurants as much as possible has been common sense since we began to learn about the novel coronavirus. Given that we need food, workers have been out there making deliveries all along. In NYC, those same drivers we heralded for bringing people a hot meal (including during climate disasters) were the same folks who couldn’t access a bathroom during their shift.
