Tuesday, October 23, marks 89 days since a federal judge’s reunification order, yet dozens of migrant children kidnapped from their parents at the border continue to remain under U.S. custody, according to recent numbers from the administration. Of these 66 children, one is aged 5 or under. Of the 66 kids, the parents of 50 have already been deported. Trump officials have struggled to reunite kids with deported parents because of their own cruelty, after having ripped apart families with no plan set in place on how to reunite them. But even kids who are being moved for reunification continue to be traumatized—earlier this month, officials returned a 4 year old to her home country without first informing her parents: Instead of reuniting with her deported father, whom she hadn’t seen since they crossed the U.S. border together six months ago, the child spent yet another night in a government-run shelter, according to Kids In Need of Defense, an organization helping the U.S. government to reunify families. Now, as 66 kids remain separated—and the administration has a record number of migrant kids in detention, the vast majority of them vulnerable minors who came here by themselves—Trump is floating officially reviving family separation as a midterms strategy to rile up his racist base, and because White House aide and white supremacist Stephen Miller likes it.
