From well before he took office, Donald Trump has peppered his speeches and statements with the claim that ‘many people’ or ‘everyone’ wants him to do something. Many people want that wall. Many people think tariffs are a great idea. And of course “many people at the higher ends of intelligence” loved the Helsinki Helsinki press conference where Trump made cow-eyes over Vladimir Putin. Many people apparently think Trump is the best thing since sliced bread, liverwurst loaf, and squeeze bottles of mayonnaise. But who are these “many people?” Who are the only Americans Trump listens to? The only ones who actually count? In an interview reported at New York Magazine, Trump has absolutely cleared up this mystery. As it turns out, the only people he listens to … are exactly who you think. Asked about the effort to declassify documents related to the Russia investigation, Trump made it crystal clear that “many people” really aren’t that many. And they have names. Trump: I have watched commentators that I respect begging the president of the United States to release them….I have been asked by so many people that I respect, please — the great Lou Dobbs, the great Sean Hannity, the wonderful great Jeanie Pirro. Fox News isn’t reporting on Trump’s actions. It’s driving Trump’s actions. Trump is holding regular late night chats with Sean Hannity. He’s quoting Fox as the authority on foreign policy. On the economy. And of course they’re his go-to reference on the Russia investigation. In every one of these instances, Trump has the whole resources of the government. But he’s not looking to the State Department, or the Commerce Department, and certainly not the Department of Justice. He’s getting his “facts” from the place that toasts them up all warm, and soft, and Trump-friendly. As Trump makes crystal clear, Fox isn’t a news organization reporting on the government. It’s not even that Trump’s White House is coordinating with Fox so they can give favorable coverage to his actions. Fox is in the drivers seat. Fox is telling Trump what to do. Sean Hannity isn’t Trump’s pal or even his partner. He’s Trump’s boss. Read more
