This is a total [effing] disgrace. The President has lost his mind." Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he agreed with the intelligence community on Russia’s responsibility for election interference. House Speaker Paul Ryan also backed up the intelligence community and said that “The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally.” Other Republicans in Congress were critical. But while few Republicans (Rep. Darrell Issa and Sen. Rand Paul show that there are exceptions) are out defending Trump’s performance, here’s the key thing: there’s no sign that any Republican in a position to do anything to limit Trump is going to … do anything to limit Trump. Enough senators issued critical quotes to jam up the Senate if they cared enough to do so. But whether because they’re cowards or because they don’t care as long as they get their tax cuts or because they’re secretly glad to keep taking Russia’s elections help, Republicans aren’t going to lift a finger to stop Trump from sitting back and doing nothing—or actively taking part—as Putin undermines American democracy.
