Now was a really bad time for the occupier of the Oval Office and his squatter at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Mick Mulvaney, to try to play this particular game with naming a permanent CFPB director. Trump and Mulvaney decided to put forward one of Mulvaney's lackeys from his permanent job directing the Office of Management and Budget. Whether they chose Kathy Kraninger because she would be a good foot soldier and do whatever Mulvaney wants her to, or whether they picked someone wholly unqualified who will be in protracted nomination fight and thus let Mulvaney stay in the job until it's resolved, they asked for trouble they didn't anticipate. That's because Kraninger, in her job at OMB, is in charge of overseeing the programs at Homeland Security and the Justice Department. The agencies implementing Trump's «zero-tolerance» policy. The agencies responsible for kidnapping and jailing babies. Two Democratic senators are demanding she answer for that. In a letter to Kraninger, Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) ask for documentation from her on her role in those policies. Her job involves not just budget preparation, the letter argues, but also «ongoing policy and management guidance» and «overseeing 'implementation of policy options.'» The senators request copies of emails, memos, and other documents detailing work Kraninger did on relevant border policies. «The American people deserve to know what role you have played in developing and implementing this appalling process,» write the senators. Warren followed up with a tweet saying «I will put a hold on her nomination—& fight it at every step—until she turns over all documents about her role in this.» She shouldn't have to put on a hold. Every member of the Senate should be asking for this information from her, especially those thirteen Republicans on the record asking Attorney General Sessions to halt family separation. If they care, if they're truly horrified, they will use every tool at their disposal to fight Trump on it. Including this nomination.
