The Trump administration policy of arresting asylum seekers, forcibly separating those families and putting the children in detention camps is receiving international condemnation, with the United Nations high commissioner for human rights blasting the policy as intentionally abusive on the part of our government. “The thought that any state would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable,” Mr. al-Hussein said. It is also a violation of international human rights treaties. Nations may not intentionally mistreat asylum-seekers in an attempt to deter others from seeking refuge. This should go without saying, but does not because the Republican Party is made up of monsters. The Trump team is not likely to care about the condemnation of worldwide human rights officials, especially as Trump United Nations ambassador prepares to withdraw the United States from the U.N. human rights council. It is possible that at some future date some other nation will take an interest in these human rights abuses, however, and the United States should be willing and prepared to extradite those that crafted and enacted these policies when that day comes.
