Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick made news on Friday when he blamed the Santa Fe High School shooting on the school having had too many doors. But Patrick wasn’t content with that display of stupid excuse-making. Over the weekend, he threw out a series of other things responsible for school shootings—a desperate “anything but guns” list. Here’s the short version: Video games “We threw God out of school” Abortion “Families that are broken apart” Doors, again Unarmed teachers Patrick did mention guns, sort of. “We have a responsibility to be sure our guns are safe at home. That's where gun control starts, at home.” Starts and stops, in his view. And the fact that long, bitter experience shows us that this does not work is no impediment to him continuing to insist it’s The Answer. Or, you know, one of them, along with video games, doors, abortion, divorce, and teachers who don’t think it’s a good idea to risk shooting their own students. Desperate. That’s the word. Patrick is so desperate to change the subject from guns—you know, what made it possible for a single teen to kill 10 people—that he’s just throwing things against the wall hoping something sticks. Maybe it works for him, though it sounds like he’s flailing a little himself. But none of these are solutions. Dan Patrick and his party are not willing to contemplate the solution that would make a difference, and we can’t let them distract us from that. Read more
