The Victoria and Albert Museum in London will be hosting a spring exhibition titled “Fashioned from Nature.”The show features 300 of the most beautiful, unsettling, and intriguing objects. The exhibition traces the complex relationship between fashion and the natural world since 1600. It examines how fashion has always taken its inspiration from nature through clothes by brands and accessories from Christian Dior, Dries van Noten, and Philip Treacy. “Fashioned from Nature” also looks at how the continuous demand for raw materials leads to damage to the environment. It also looks at campaigners and protest groups that have brought this issue to the forefront through the Fashion Revolution and Vivienne Westwood. The show also looks at the role of design in creating a better and sustainable fashion industry. The exhibition will delve into the last 400 years of fashion to explore with objects dating to the early 1600s. The installation includes an 1875 pair of earrings formed from the heads of two real Honeycreeper birds. A 1860s muslin dress decorated with the iridescent green wing cases of hundreds of jewel beetles. These are showcased along with specimens of natural history linking the ways fashion has used animal materials in its designs and production. A selection of posters, slogan clothes, and artworks with an outfit by Vivienne Westwood worn by her while protesting about climate change are also part of the display.“Fashioned from Nature” runs from April 21, 2018, through January 27, 2019, at Victoria and Albert Museum, Cromwell Rd, Knightsbridge, London SW7 2RL, UK.For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide-venues/288393/museum-overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
