Texas realtor who flew on private jet to the Capitol arrested after filming herself breaking in

A real estate broker from Frisco, Texas, has been charged in the Capitol building insurrection that took place in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6. Jenna Ryan documented her crimes on social media and is being charged with “knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority” and “disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.” The complaint includes Facebook posts from Ryan’s account detailing her private jet flight, with images, from Denton, Texas, to Washington to participate in a crime against our democracy. Ryan made headlines with her photos and video from the Capitol siege, including one strange image of her in front of one of the many broken Capitol building windows that showed her smiling and putting up the victory sign (Lord knows it wasn’t the peace sign), and writing this cryptic soliloquy: “Window at The capital [sic]. And if the news doesn’t stop lying about us we’re going to come after their studios next...” Ummm. Got that?

Fast food workers to strike on MLK’s Birthday, demand $15 minimum wage

Rita Blalock has worked at a North Carolina McDonald’s for 10 years, taking the bus to and from work each day. During the COVID-19 crisis, the 54-year-old has continued cranking out food while suffering from cataracts, risking her health and her life for $10 an hour. Blalock does not have health insurance, and the multibillion dollar company that employs her does not offer her paid sick time or hazard pay to work through the pandemic. At times, she’s relied on government assistance to eat—and even then, she sometimes only ate once a day. Blalock and other fast food workers in North Carolina are fighting back against these conditions by striking on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and demanding that corporations increase wages.

Biden unveils $1.9 trillion COVID-19 pandemic relief and economic recovery plan

President-elect Joe Biden released a $1.9 trillion emergency COVID-19 relief plan Thursday. His proposal is a wide-ranging package intended to address the dual public health and economic crises of the pandemic, with $400 billion targeted to coronavirus response and $1 trillion for economic relief to families. It has a major focus on coronavirus testing, vaccine production, and distribution as well as economic support at every level, from individuals and families to state and local government. «During this pandemic, millions of Americans, through no fault of their own, have lost the dignity and respect that comes with a job and a paycheck,» Biden said in his speech announcing the plan. «There is real pain overwhelming the real economy.» The plan includes more than $400 billion to beef up the national vaccination program, increase testing and contact tracing, and restore paid sick leave that the package passed in December ended. Biden's goal is to have the majority of K-8 schools reopened nationwide in the first 100 days, and includes $130 billion for school funding as well as $35 billion for higher education. The plan includes $1,400 in direct payments to fulfill Democrats' efforts from December to provide $2,000 checks by boosting the $600 provided in that bill. Yes, they should treat that $600 for what it was—inadequate—and go for the full $2,000 again. The plan also includes $440 billion to small businesses, local communities, and transit systems.

He went viral for saving the Senate, but Army vet Eugene Goodman ‘was a hero long before'

The Black police officer who went viral for his bravery in distracting the angry Donald Trump mob that took over the Capitol is being rightfully called a hero, not just by Americans nationwide but representatives in Congress. Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman lured a group of rioters away from the Senate chamber’s entrance to protect members of Congress on Jan. 6.  As a result, Reps. Charlie Crist of Florida, Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, and Nancy Mace of South Carolina introduced a bill Thursday to award Goodman the Congressional Gold Medal for “bravery and quick thinking during last week’s insurrection at the United States Capitol." Since the horrific Capitol riots, many have criticized the lack of security in the building and Capitol Police leadership for its lack of preparation, resulting in the resignation of the Capitol Police’s chief. But amid all the criticisms for Capitol Police comes praise for Goodman and his quick thinking. The award several lawmakers hope to give Goodman is considered one of the highest civilian awards in the country.

A Tyrannical Tabby Rules an Opulent Assemblage of Densely Layered Scenes by Artist Kris Kuksi

A bejeweled tabby presides over Kris Kuksi’s sprawling new landscape teeming with retro figures, ornate baubles, and mass-produced trinkets all blanketed with a thick coat of metallic paint. The Lawrence, Kansas-based artist (previously) melds found objects into complex, frieze-style assemblages that are infused with themes of “historical narratives, biblical subjects, animal worship, architecture, symbolic views on commerce and development, as well as human psychology and behavior.” Titled “Tabby Tyrant,” the fantastical work is replete with juxtapositions: the individual and the collective, peace and war, industrial and classical architecture, and historic and modern.
