Coney Barrett confirmation stirs ‘sleeping giant’ pro-choice religious community

In the weeks leading up to Monday’s Supreme Court confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett, there was a slate of reporting about abortion and religious communities. Much of the reporting was ahistorical, inaccurate, and failed to convey that Coney Barrett was not confirmed despite her inexperience and extreme views, but because of her inexperience and extreme views. Coney Barrett has one job: to push the court further right—and this includes ending the ability to legally access abortion care in the United States.   Reporting has largely positioned people of faith as a fundamental barrier to abortion access in the United States, either because they vehemently oppose it or fear repercussions for supporting it. In one striking example of this narrative, an Associated Press article published by The Washington Post featured insights from nine religious thought leaders and members of clergy, eight of whom were men. The men vacillated between hellfire condemnation of abortion and tempered support for “a woman’s right to make decisions over her own body.”

Montana Democrat tricks Chris Christie into doing Cameo message trolling Republican Greg Gianforte

Cameo is an online service that allows you to get celebrities and other public people to record messages to send to friends and family. It’s used to send well wishes and birthday wishes, silly messages, and the like. Celebrities usually address their phone camera, for a price, and use the person’s first name. Democratic candidate for governor of Montana Mike Cooney decided to take advantage of this service—in the service of his own campaign. In fact, either Cooney or someone on his campaign noticed that former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie recently joined the Cameo roster of “celebrities.” This revelation has led to one truly terrific trolling move by the Cooney campaign.

Thursday Night Owls: Kavanaugh and Barrett show they're political operatives not impartial justices

Night Owls, a themed open thread, appears at Daily Kos seven days a week Matt Ford at The New Republic writes—Brett Kavanaugh Will Have His Revenge on America. He and Amy Barrett have demonstrated this week that they should be thought of as political operatives, not justices:  Two years ago, Justice Brett Kavanaugh appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to defend himself against allegations of sexual misconduct. He lashed out at Democrats, left-wing activists, and those who sought “revenge on behalf of the Clintons,” whom he had investigated in the 1990s. Then he gave a stark warning. “This grotesque and coordinated character assassination will dissuade competent and good people of all political persuasions from serving our country,” Kavanaugh angrily told senators. “And as we all know, in the United States political system of the early 2000s, what goes around comes around.” “What comes around goes around” echoed in my ears last night as I read the Supreme Court’s order in Democratic National Committee v. Wisconsin State Legislature, a dispute over the state’s absentee ballot deadline. A federal judge in Wisconsin, citing the coronavirus pandemic, ordered the state to count ballots that arrive by mail by November 9 so long as they are postmarked by Election Day on November 3. The Supreme Court blocked that ruling in a 5–3 vote on Tuesday night in an order on its “shadow docket,” where it decides emergency filings without full briefings or oral arguments. The ruling is a victory for Republican efforts to deny voters greater flexibility while they vote during a pandemic.

Coalition sues Customs and Border Protection for records on agency's role in suppressing protests

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) failed to disclose information as required by law regarding its deployment to national protests following the police killing of George Floyd earlier this year, so a coalition of leading civil and immigrants’ rights organizations have now sued the out-of-control federal immigration agency in order to force it to release the records. “We should all ask ourselves why a federal agency whose purported role involves border enforcement is deployed to police peaceful protests in U.S. cities nationwide,” American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU) of San Diego & Imperial Counties attorney Mitra Ebadolahi said in a statement received by Daily Kos. “There is an urgent need to ensure that the American public understands CBP’s mission ... and role in repressing Americans’ constitutional rights.” If Trump attempts to stop the vote counting, we need to take to the streets. The Protect the Results coalition has been preparing for this by organizing hundreds of post-election events across the country. Watch the Birdie: A Restored Brass Gadget Dating Back 140 Years Reveals a Historic Photography Trick

Prior to asking subjects to grin and “say cheese,” photographers would entreat those awaiting a portrait to “watch the birdie.” Now generally out of use, the phrase dates back to 1879 and references a technique to capture both kids’ and adults’ attention at just the right moment: Photographers would attach a little brass bird to the top of their lens—the 1950s film Watch the Birdie erroneously positions a songbird on the main character’s hat rather than his camera—and squeeze a pneumatic bulb, making the creature chirp and flap its wings as they snapped an image.
