Virus leaves the US travel industry struggling to recover

U.S. air travel down almost 90% from a year ago. A ghostly emptiness at Hawaii's tourist hotels. Deserted Las Vegas casinos counting the days to reopening. Few sectors of the economy have endured as much devastation from the coronavirus as the travel business

Morning Digest: Republicans rush to save another Senate seat with massive Georgia ad bookings

The Daily Kos Elections Morning Digest is compiled by David Nir, Jeff Singer, Stephen Wolf, Carolyn Fiddler, and Matt Booker, with additional contributions from David Jarman, Steve Singiser, Daniel Donner, James Lambert, David Beard, and Arjun Jaikumar. Leading Off ● GA-Sen-A: Fox News reports that two major Republican outside groups, One Nation and the Senate Leadership Fund, are making huge TV reservations to help Georgia Sen. David Perdue fend off Democrat Jon Ossoff. One Nation has booked $8.65 million in ads that will start Aug. 4, while the SLF reportedly will reserve $13.5 million for commercials that will begin in mid-September. The NRSC also will launch a $2.1 million TV campaign next week, though it's not clear yet if those ads will go towards helping Perdue or appointed Sen. Kelly Loeffler, who faces several candidates from both parties in the November special all-party primary.

Trump has known Russia was funding the Taliban since 2017, and he never once pushed back

The news that Russia was paying Taliban militia a bounty to kill American soldiers was shocking. The idea that Donald Trump had known about it for a matter of months, and not only failed to take action, but pressured the G7 to readmit Russia even more so. But since that initial story broke, the date of Trump’s knowledge keeps moving back, and the extent of Trump’s actions in support of Vladimir Putin keeps getting underlined. Trump wasn’t just briefed in February, he was given a personal briefing by John Bolton over a year ago. Even with that knowledge, Trump has repeatedly supported Russia and made an unprecedented series of private, unrecorded calls to Putin—at least five just in the last few months. But now it seems that even Trump’s briefing in 2019 was very late in the game. Just Security is reporting that Pentagon officials became aware of Russian efforts to fund the Taliban two years earlier, in 2017. This transfer of funds helped not just to fund attacks on individual U. S. troops, but to disrupt attempts to secure a lasting peace agreement. Through it all, Trump took no action. Actually, that’s not true—through it all, Trump insisted that the Pentagon share information with the people who were behind the murder of U. S. troops. And that action gave the Putin and the Kremlin a very good picture of Trump: A weak man who was in their pocket.
