Trump immigration adviser Stephen Miller's leaked emails out him as a full-blown white nationalist

White House adviser Stephen Miller has been an obvious white supremacist obsessed with pushing anti-immigrant policy for as long as he’s been in the public eye. But emails he sent in 2015 and early 2016 go deeper, showing how committed to white nationalist ideas and thinkers he is. The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch reviewed more than 900 emails between Miller and editors at Breitbart News, which were leaked by former Breitbarter Katie McHugh. The upshot: Stephen Miller is who we thought—who we knew—he was. In the emails, Miller shared stories from the far-right conspiracy theory site Infowars and the white nationalist website VDARE and the white nationalist website American Renaissance, and McHugh notes that Miller referred to the latter by the familiar, even affectionate nickname AmRen. The subjects of some of the stories will be familiar to people who’ve followed Donald Trump’s Miller-influenced immigration policy. One story from VDARE was about the evils of Temporary Protected Status, which allows people fleeing unsafe conditions in their home countries to live and work in the U.S. for a limited time. Trump has tried to end TPS for people from several countries, and denied TPS for people fleeing the hurricane-battered Bahamas. Miller successfully pressed Breitbart to use a white nationalist novel to attack Pope Francis’ statements in support of refugees. Miller is now an immigration adviser to a president who has slashed the number of refugees the U.S. accepts. In the emails, which were sent before the Nazi demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia, Miller seems particularly upset about the removal of Confederate monuments, pressing McHugh to write attacking stores that had stopped selling Confederate flags but were still selling “commie flags” and “Che shirts.” The next day, Miller asked “what do the [Confederate monument] vandals say to the people fighting and dying overseas in uniform right now who are carrying on a seventh or eighth generation of military service in their families, stretching back to our founding?” (Gee, Stephen, I don’t know, maybe that military service to the Confederacy was service in an army fighting against the United States?)

GOP's opening salvo on impeachment hearings requires America's absolute ignorance of the facts

In advance of the first public hearings in the impeachment inquiry Wednesday, Republicans and Democrats worked to draw the battle lines for the American people. “We intend to conduct these hearings with the seriousness and professionalism the public deserves,” House Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff wrote in a letter to his colleagues. «The process will be fair to the President, the Committee Members, and the witnesses.” Schiff also released a six-page memo outlining the rules of engagement for the hearings. Following up on questioning from Republicans intended to reveal the identity of the whistleblower, Schiff preemptively warned that members “shall behave at all times in a manner that shall reflect creditably on the House,» according to the House Code of Official Conduct. «I will do my utmost during the hearings to safeguard the rights of the witnesses and all Members of the Committee, just as Committee Members should strive to conduct themselves with “dignity, propriety, courtesy, and decorum.” And in a preview of the questioning, Schiff also noted that he plans to »yield extensive time" to the lead lawyer for the Democratic majority. Only after the conclusion of that extended questioning will members be recognized for their customary five-minute rounds. Republicans, on the other hand, sought to dismiss the entirety of the public hearings as an unnecessary and partisan-driven endeavor. The game for House Republicans is to keep the number of their members who ultimately vote for any articles of impeachment to zero—the same number of GOP lawmakers who supported the procedural vote to move forward with the inquiry. Keeping that number as low as possible in the House will allow Trump to dismiss the whole inquiry as a partisan sham and create more incentive for GOP senators to follow suit and vote for acquittal in the Senate.

DACA recipient and plaintiff in lawsuit against Trump admin says, 'We’re standing up as a community'

Martín Batalla Vidal said he’ll never forget the day that the Trump administration rescinded the program that allows him and 700,000 young immigrants to legally work and live free from the fear of deportation. “My phone wouldn’t stop buzzing from text messages and calls from my friends,” he writes. “My stomach tightened, my body felt weak, tears welled in my eyes. My best friend sent me a message, ‘That’s it. It’s over.’” But it wasn’t over, Batalla Vidal said. He sued, and on Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments around the Trump administration’s unlawful and cruel termination of the successful and popular Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. For Batalla Vidal, it was also incredibly personal: “The case that bears my name, McAleenan v. Vidal, is one of three consolidated cases that has reached the highest court in the land,” he said. Batalla Vidal said he wanted to defend DACA in court and in the streets—he was also part of the recent march that traveled 230 miles from New York City to Washington, D.C.—because it “has changed my life and protected my family. It has allowed me to go back to school, start my career, and feel safe with my family knowing I wouldn’t be separated from them. And I knew that, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented youth across the country and our allies, we would fight to keep it.”  Should the justices side with the Trump administration, the U.S. will be reneging on an agreement it made with hundreds of thousands of people, that if they trusted the government with their personal information, they could live with some sense of security. Through these protections, young immigrants have gained greater access to higher education, better jobs, purchased homes, and supported their families. Entire communities are at stake. “We are business owners, artists, school teachers, lawyers, mothers, fathers, and nurses like me,” Batalla Vidal said. “Even though the program’s structure has meant that I have been living my life in two-year increments (recipients must reapply every two years), DACA provides me with critical immigration relief, allowing me to work and remain in the United States with my family.” It’s clear why he’s fighting—and it’s clear we need to keep supporting him and all young immigrants so that they can continue to thrive and live in dignity here, where they belong. “Our message is clear,” he said. “The termination of DACA was unlawful and we will continue to show our resilience as we fight for our futures. We aren’t going back into hiding. We’re standing up as a community, stronger than ever—ready to fight.”

Carbon nanotubes show a love/hate relationship with water

New research reveals that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a coating can both repel and hold water in place, a useful property for applications like printing, spectroscopy, water transport, or harvesting surfaces. When water is dropped on a CNT forest, the CNTs repel the water, and it forms a sphere. However, when flipped over, the drop does not fall to the ground but rather clings to the surface.

Anonymous Protagonists Navigate Imagined Worlds in Multi-Layered Illustrations by Felicia Chiao

Illustrator Felicia Chiao balances out her work as an industrial designer at IDEO with imaginative drawings. Chiao’s fanciful worlds are populated with a repeating humanoid protagonist, as well as spirit-like black figures reminiscent of the symbolic creatures in Hayao Miyazaki films. The artist balances her charming aesthetic—cheerful details like daisies and friendly worms—with more evocative emotional themes. “Illustration has always been a way for me to destress and work through whatever emotions I’m feeling,” says Chiao.
