Updated: 15-year-old in Alabama dies by suicide after anti-LGBTQ bullying by students at his school

A 15-year-old has died by suicide in Huntsville, Alabama. Nigel Shelby was a student at Huntsville High School, where he had been bullied for being gay. But you wouldn’t know about it, especially that last part, if you were relying on local mainstream media in the city of Huntsville or in the state: As of this writing, almost no stories about the bullying were to be found among those outlets. Reports had started to circulate about the bullying Shelby had endured and about his death over the weekend on social media. The news was picked up by Tennessee Valley Rocket City Pride, which paid tribute to Shelby at its Easter Drag Brunch this past Sunday and discussed bullying and the resources available to kids who are marginalized and bullied because of who they are. The state of Alabama has no laws protecting LGBTQ people of any age against discrimination. It has no laws protecting LGBTQ children from the kind of treatment Nigel Shelby suffered. In fact, in reaction to Shelby’s death, the principal of Huntsville High School posted a note on the school’s PTSA Facebook page that made no mention at all of either the bullying the child had endured or the fact that he identified as gay. “We were saddened to learn this morning of the death of Nigel Shelby, one of our 9th grade students. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” principal Aaron King wrote. As of now, there has been no response from the school or the PTSA to the many comments on the Facebook post demanding recognition of the bullying that children such as Shelby endure because of their identities. This comes as no surprise in a state in which the laws on education mandate, with regard to sex education, that the curriculum for such a program must include “An emphasis, in a factual manner and from a public health perspective, that homosexuality is not a lifestyle acceptable to the general public and that homosexual conduct is a criminal offense under the laws of the state.” (Alabama codes have not been updated, apparently, to reflect that “homosexual conduct,” as of the Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v. Texas in 2003, is no longer considered a crime.) Nigel Shelby was bullied for who he was. His identity and what he suffered should not be erased. Maria Butina acted as an 'access agent' recruiting willing Republicans ... and she wasn't alone

On Friday, the U.S. government filed sentencing guidelines for Russian agent Maria Butina. Despite speculation that Butina’s connections with the NRA and Republican politicians might net her no more than a suspended sentence and a deportation back to Russia—where she could expect something of a hero’s welcome—the government instead asked for an 18-month sentence on a single count of conspiracy. They describe her as “not a spy in the traditional sense of trying to gain access to classified information to send back to her home country,” but insist that Butina’s actions were “for the benefit of the Russian Federation, and those actions had the potential to damage the national security of the United States.” The sentencing document details Butina’s actions, how they compare to those of others sentenced for the same crime, and why the government is seeking a sentence solidly in the middle of the potential range. But appended to the sentencing guidelines is an addendum authored by the former head of the FBI Counterintelligence Division. And that addendum doesn’t just explain why Butina’s actions are significant; it provides a window into something that has so far gone almost without mention in the post-Mueller report period: the counterintelligence investigation of Russian actions. Andrew Weiss, a Russia expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, picked up on the addendum to Butina’s sentencing and has done an evaluation of how these pages reveal the significance of what’s still lurking out there when it comes to Russia, the Trump campaign, 2016, and beyond. The counterintelligence aspect of the Russia investigation is the one area that has been so far fully “redacted.” Because it’s not in the report. Other than a few black bars in the Mueller report that may be related to that investigation, the counterintelligence work has continued in silence, offering few insights into its discoveries. But what’s revealed in this document is Butina’s role not in gathering intelligence, but in acting as an “access agent.” Her purpose wasn’t to rifle the files of the NRA for damaging information. It was to find those people in the Republican Party so desperate for power that they would eagerly reach out to Moscow as a means of keeping or extending that power. And she found many.

Trump administration forces U.N. to water down resolution on rape as a weapon of war

The Trump administration has succeeded in its efforts to derail a U.N. resolution on rape as a weapon of war. The U.S. was threatening to veto any resolution that hinted at the necessity of abortion being available to the victims of this ongoing atrocity, and it won. The Security Council passed a watered-down version of the resolution, one that doesn't allow for enforcement. The resolution that passed has eliminated language about providing «sexual and reproductive health care» to survivors of rape and abuse. Compared to an earlier draft obtained by CNN, the final draft has also eliminated, at the behest of the Trump administration, language referring to sexual health and «the training of journalists on the issue of sexual violence.» China and Russia abstained from voting, having won by getting the Trump administration to do the dirty work of getting the language removed, and the resolution passed 13-0. Dr. Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year for their efforts to combat sexual violence, said in a statement that «there is simply no excuse for continuing to fail those who have already been victimized—as well as those who continue to be at risk of—devastating levels of sexual violence in conflict.» The watering-down of the U.N.'s response to the use of rape as a weapon of war will certainly not reduce the occurrence of it. The Trump administration's efforts to eliminate abortion in conflict zones will possibly only exacerbate it, making it an even more effective weapon by forcing women to bear the offspring of violence.

Zack Wheeler accomplishes impressive feat with arm and bat

Zack Wheeler became the first pitcher this season to accomplish a pretty impressive feat. During the New York Mets' 9-0 win over Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, Wheeler did it all. The Mets’ starting pitcher earned the victory after throwing seven scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Wheeler hit a solo home run to left center field. The home run was the first of Wheeler’s career. It allowed him to become the first pitcher this year to throw a pitch 100 or more miles per hour as well as hit a ball over 100 miles per hour. Wheeler joined Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom on the list of Mets pitchers who have hit home runs so far this season. Not only do the Mets have quality starting pitchers, they can swing the bat as well.
