Trump leaves disgruntled Republicans holding the shutdown bag

Individual 1 has been rather mum on that whole «I am proud to shut down the government» schtick since that disastrous on-camera meeting with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. He kinda, sorta backed away from accepting all the credit for a looming shutdown with a lame video he tweeted out, trying to shift the onus back on Democrats, but the damage was done. The worst of that damage is with his fellow Republicans who are at a loss as to how to proceed. There's small satisfaction in seeing the horrible Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) having to deal with this. «There is no discernible plan, none that's been disclosed,» he told The Hill. «Everybody is looking to him for a signal about what he wants to do, and so far it's not clear.» Not all Republicans are pissed at him over this. He's got a cheering section in the deplorable wing of the party. The likes of Rep. Steve King (R-IA), Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who has lost his fucking mind, think it's great. He «thoroughly enjoyed» watching Trump debase the office of the presidency in that meeting with Pelosi and Schumer, and said «it was an interesting exchange of ideas and positions, and I hope the president will insist on additional funding for the border, including the wall, because we need it and I hope we can find a way forward.» Like I said, he's lost his fucking mind. There's a glimmer of a hint, however, that Trump is at least considering not having his shutdown. According to two sources talking to Politico, he's «mulling the prospect of making a counter-offer to Democratic leaders that would prevent a partial government shutdown and kick the border wall fight into next year.» Meetings on that with White House staff are expected Friday afternoon. Congressional Republicans have succeeded in getting him to postpone his border wall shutdown time and again. This time they are apparently trying to sell him on the idea that «the White House could still have its border wall fight in January and also disrupt the new Democratic majority in the House from starting fresh with their own agenda.» Because Republicans have forgotten that it's possible for congressional leadership to simultaneously walk and chew gum. They've also apparently forgotten what it's like when Nancy Pelosi is in charge of the House. What might be the most effective line they could take with him is that his 16-day vacation at Mar-a-Lago that is scheduled to begin on deadline day—next Friday—could be ruined if he doesn't relent. That should do the trick.

Everything Trump is under investigation, including a Trump-aligned Super PAC

If you're having trouble tracking exactly what Trump-related investigations are under way, the easiest rule of thumb is that if Trump is at the center of it, it's almost certainly drawing federal scrutiny. The Rachel Maddow Show's Steve Benen has a helpful list: Donald Trump is under investigation.  Trump’s business is under investigation.  Trump’s foundation is under investigation.  Trump’s campaign operation is under investigation.  Trump’s transition team is under investigation.  Trump’s inaugural committee is under investigation. But the inquiries don't stop with Trump-centered entities, they are also now extending to organizations that should supposedly have one-degree of separation from Trump. Take the pro-Trump Super PAC, Rebuilding America Now, initiated in the summer of 2016 by convicted felon and former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort and headed by billionaire Trump bestie Thomas Barrack, who also headed the inaugural committee that's newly under investigation.  The question at hand regarding the Super PAC is whether foreign entities contributed to it in order to (say it with me now) gain influence with Trump! Shocker. Rebuilding America Now gave the Trump campaign a lifeline at the time because many traditional GOP donors had closed their wallets to Trump and he was too cheap to fund his own campaign even though he constantly bragged about doing so on the trail. The New York Times writes: The inquiry focuses on whether people from Middle Eastern nations — including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — used straw donors to disguise their donations to the two funds. Federal law prohibits foreign contributions to federal campaigns, political action committees and inaugural funds. [...]  In an interview with investigators a year ago, Mr. Barrack said that Mr. Manafort seemed to view the political committee as an arm of the campaign, despite laws meant to prevent such coordination, according to a person familiar with the interview. So while many American donors blacklisted Trump's campaign, foreigners may have stepped into the void to help create the beast that has now corrupted our government. Perhaps it wasn't just Russia that worked to pervert and subvert the will of the American people.

Mueller team: FBI didn't trick Michael Flynn into lying about his Russia contacts

Robert Mueller's team isn't buying the claim of former Trump national security adviser and felon Michael Flynn that he was somehow coerced into lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia. In a new filing Friday, Mueller's team rejects the claim of Flynn’s lawyers earlier this week that FBI agents didn't properly inform him of the nature of their questions when they interviewed him regarding Russia early in the administration. The New York Times writes: “A sitting national security adviser, former head of an intelligence agency, retired lieutenant general and 33-year veteran of the armed forces knows he should not lie to federal agents,” prosecutors wrote in court papers. “He does not need to be warned it is a crime to lie to federal agents to know the importance of telling them the truth.” Amen. Frankly, it's a mystery that Flynn's lawyers poked the eye of the FBI when Mueller's team had already submitted an incredibly lenient sentencing recommendation last week. In their court filing asking for leniency from the judge, Flynn's lawyers argued that former FBI agents Andrew McCabe and Peter Strzok took advantage of Flynn’s «unguarded» nature with them and didn't «warn Flynn that it was a crime to lie during an F.B.I. interview.» Because apparently only rocket scientists and brain surgeons know it's a bad idea to lie to the FBI, but former military and intelligence operatives don't. Still, Flynn sat for 19 interviews with Mueller’s team, and their Friday court filing argued Flynn should still receive a light sentence for his crime—0 to 6 months’ jail time is a standard sentence. Whatever Flynn told Mueller, it must have proven incredibly valuable.

Christie snubs Trump on chief of staff post as payback for Trump's transition greed

Following revelations of a new investigation into Trump's inaugural committee, keep in mind that part of the reason former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie flipped Donald Trump the bird Friday when it came to taking a top White House post stems from how badly he got burned by Trump's greed concerning the transition committee.  At the heart of the inaugural committee probe is whether top donors tried to buy access to Trump, and where exactly that record-setting $107 million inaugural haul went. If Chris Christie's experience with temporarily running Trump's transition committee is any gauge, Trump absolutely considered those inaugural funds to be contributions to his personal piggy bank marked «mine!»   In fact, the Michael Lewis book The Fifth Risk recounts some of Christie's transition efforts in 2016 before Trump won the election—and then literally and figuratively trashed every shred of work Christie had done. Keep in mind that party nominees are legally required to form transition teams. Trump didn't want one but Christie explained he must have one and he could either pay for it himself or pull from campaign funds. Trump refused to do either, so Christie was forced to fundraise for the committee in order to pay its hundred-plus staffers. Trump almost entirely ignored the transition work until he read an article reporting that Christie had raised several million dollars toward the effort. That's when Steven Bannon walked into Trump's Trump Tower residence to find Christie getting an earful from Trump. Lewis writes: Trump was apoplectic, actually yelling, You're stealing my money! You're stealing my fucking money! What the fuck is this?? Seeing Bannon, Trump turned on him and screamed, Why are you letting him steal my fucking money? Bannon and Christie together set out to explain to Trump federal law. [...] To which Trump replied, Fuck the law. I don't give a fuck about the law. I want my fucking money. Bannon and Christie tried to explain that Trump couldn't have both his money and a transition. Shut it down, said Trump. Shut down the transition.  Christie didn't shut it down.

The exhibitions include new sculptures, like Malland’s piece “Scientia Potestas Est” (above) which presents a young boy on a stack of used books. More

Sports & Politics Intersect: Oakland sues over pending Raiders departure

“Before a team is ripped from the fabric of a community, there needs to be a valid reason other than simply money. The City of Oakland deserved better treatment.” - Clifford Pearson, lead attorney from Pearson, Simon & Warshaw, LLP In the midst of an awful season in which the Oakland Raiders have seen Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper excel in their new homes, the Raiders, along with the other 31 NFL teams, are being sued for violating federal antitrust law for trying to move into their own new home. The city of Oakland contends that the Raiders moving to Las Vegas not only violates federal law but also the NFL’s relocation guidelines set in 1983 — ironically after the Raiders sued the NFL for, you guessed it, antitrust violations.  While the city isn’t going to try and force the Raiders to stay in Oakland, it will seek “a resolution for the maximum amount of damages available.” The city alleges that the more than $370 million in relocation fees paid to the 31 other NFL teams is an illegal move to get the own
