Open thread for night owls: Young climate activists going after McConnell on 'shameless' GND vote

Jake Johnson at Common Dreams writes—Youth Climate Leaders Launch Campaign to Make McConnell Regret 'Shameless' Green New Deal Ploy: As new polling found that over 80 percent of the American public supports the key pillars of the Green New Deal resolution, the youth-led Sunrise Movement on Thursday launched an action plan aimed at making Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) regret his «shameless» plan to rush a floor vote on the bold climate plan. [...] «This is a shameless political ploy by Mitch McConnell to try to slow our momentum. He and his fossil fuel billionaire donors have no plan to stop climate change. They are calling this vote because they know this resolution is a powerful organizing tool, and they want to take it away,» Sunrise co-founder Varshini Prakash wrote in an email to supporters. «For the past two days, our organizing team has been charting out an ambitious plan to use this vote to put the Green New Deal in the national spotlight, and pressure all senators to back the resolution.» Here is Sunrise's plan to pressure senators to back the Green New Deal, which will culminate in a nationwide day of action on Feb. 26: Kick off the #SenateSprint this week and next. We'll write Letters to the Editor and show up at Senate offices to urge them to co-sponsor the resolution. Mass action in D.C. on Feb 25th. Young people from Kentucky, McConnell's home state, are planning to confront Mitch McConnell in D.C.—we need to be there to back them. As we're flooding the Senate, we're asking hubs and allies to flood Senate offices with thousands of calls. Turn up the heat on Feb 26th. All across the country, we'll be storming into offices, singing, dropping banners, rallying outside, and making it clear that young people are ready to hold our politicians' feet to the fire if they don't co-sponsor the Green New Deal. «The fact that McConnell is trying to stop our organizing is a sign that he's scared,» Prakash concluded. «It is a testament to the power of our organizing. We can't back down now. In fact, it's time to ramp up. We are going to take this challenge from Mitch McConnell and use it as an opportunity to build even more support for the Green New Deal. We're not going to let him win.» Indivisible’s list of Resistance Events & Groups TOP COMMENTS • HIGH IMPACT STORIES • THE WEEK’S HIGH IMPACT STORIES QUOTATION “The character of every act depends on the circumstances in which it is done … The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fires in a theatre and causing a panic.” ~~Oliver Wendell Holmes, Schenck v. We must methodically take our wealth back from the super-rich—before it's too late

Many think that when anyone criticizes the super rich—specifically the multimillionaires and the billionaires—that it stems from nothing more than wealth envy. While that may be true for a few who themselves were unable to attain that feat, for most it is about equity and fairness.  Most remember the speech about greed given by Michael Douglas’ character Gordon Gekko in the 1987 movie Wall Street. It was short, but it was a confirming catalyst that allowed me to see the fraud that is our current economic system. Teldar Paper, Mr. Cromwell, Teldar Paper has 33 different vice presidents each earning over 200 thousand dollars a year. Now, I have spent the last two months analyzing what all these guys do, and I still can’t figure it out. One thing I do know is that our paper company lost 110 million dollars last year, and I’ll bet that half of that was spent in all the paperwork going back and forth between all these vice presidents. The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be survival of the unfittest. Well, in my book you either do it right or you get eliminated. In the last seven deals that I’ve been involved with, there were 2.5 million stockholders who have made a pretax profit of 12 billion dollars. Thank you. I am not a destroyer of companies. I am a liberator of them! The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much. The essence of that speech was that of a master, a puppeteer, controlling companies and thus the lives of millions via financial transactions that built or created nothing of value. They made money by seeing the economic pieces solely as pawns to play with in a game of wealth extraction. Plutocrats and capitalist apologists can attempt to frame it in a more palatable form, but they cannot remove the stench for those not wearing gas masks. It is clear, however, that Americans are not greedy to the extent that plutocrats are, and plutocrats prey on that reality in order to gorge themselves. If greed was good and we all suffered from the excesses of it, the ones who would succeed would be the ones capable of making something of value to society, not those who depend on the manipulation of numbers.

Are we a democracy or are we a monarchy?

So now we’ve got our national emergency. It’s absolute bullshit. Everyone—including The Man Who Lost The Popular Vote himself—is under no illusions about this. It is two things: ego and politics. It’s about ego because Trump is pissed that he’s not getting what he wanted from Congress on the wall. And it’s about politics because he needs to mollify his base: the followers of Rush Limbaugh (who continued to maintain, just this week, that “Building the wall is fundamental.”), Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham, people who are really going to be pissed off that he couldn’t get what he wanted from Congress on the wall. Trump wants to get that wall. Trump needs to get that wall. And he’s willing to destroy our democracy in order to do it. xThis bill must NOT be signed by @realDonaldTrump.— Laura Ingraham (@IngrahamAngle) February 14, 2019 During the shutdown Trump floated the idea of declaring a national emergency, and in a post about a month ago I laid out the reasons why doing so were fraudulent in terms of the facts. I concluded that: We have three branches of government because our founders believed that investing too much power in any one branch could, and likely would, lead to tyranny. If Trump does as he has threatened and manages to get away with it, he will not have ended a crisis, he will instead have plunged us into one as dangerous as any which our democracy has faced. Additionally, Mark Sumner has revisited these issues in a terrific analysis—which includes a brilliant takedown of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s role as an enabler in this disgrace—as have others, so I'm not going to do another overview of why this declaration of a national emergency is so dangerous to our constitutional democracy. In this post, I’d like to discuss some important historical examples of the executive branch, here and abroad, exercising authority to spend the people’s money, in the hope that doing so will bring some clarity to what Individual 1 is plotting here.

Please stop, news cycle. Please just stop. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize last autumn after receiving a request from the U.S. government to do so, the Asahi newspaper reported on Sunday. There. Now that's in your head and you'll never be able to get it out: Team Trump made a quiet request to the Japanese Prime Minister to nominate Donald for the Actual Genuine Nobel Peace Prize, Non-Chocolate Edition after Trump (1) threatened war with North Korea, (2) called the North Korean dictator rude names on Twitter, only to (3) cap it off with a face-to-face meeting that North Korea has been itching for for decades as confirmation of their «world power» status but which has, to date, produced little in the way of measurable progress. Peace!

I used to be a 'centrist' Democrat

There was a point in time when I believed I was what might be called a “centrist” Democrat. I was just getting interested in political concerns following the first two years of the Bill Clinton administration. He and the Democratic-controlled Congress had managed to pass their first budget which, like George H. W. Bush before him, had been an attempt to try to correct the growing federal deficit by increasing the top marginal rate to 39 percent after it had been previously slashed under Reagan from 70 percent, to 50 percent, and then down to28 percent. It was a time when Democrats had implemented the first-ever assault weapons ban and the headlines were dominated by the deadly tragedies of the Waco Siege, the first World Trade Center attack, and the Oklahoma City Bombing. I believed that every idea had its own inherent merit and it should matter what the roots of the idea were, or which person or party had conceived it. What should matter was whether it was a good idea that was more likely to accomplish its goal with a minimum of negative side effects or collateral damage. I essentially agreed with Bill Clinton’s idea of centrism, or “third way” politics, where the ideas of both the left and the right were considered and where they could be implemented without regard to ideological purity or party perfection. Then came the Gingrich revolution, and he and the GOP swept into the House along with his “Contract with America.” I didn’t understand who these people were. I didn’t know why they were so massively angry, or why they seemed to be so mean, following Gingrich’s own philosophy of “going negative” and using certain words to paint the opposition as being “bizarre,  cheats, corrupt, destructive, a disgrace, incompetent, insensitive, radical, selfish, shallow, sick, traitors.”  It was clear that this new crop of Republicans wasn’t concerned with whether any particular idea was actually “good.” They were absolute ideological purists, crusaders, and warriors against the dangerous anti-gun, pro-tax liberal hordes. It was probably the last time that our government was even partially functional.

Fendi Launches the “BaguetteFriendsForever” Series Marking the Return of Its Iconic Bag

Fendi recently launched its new #BaguetteFriendsForever campaign, which is a series of three short films that describe the urban escapades of best friends, at the same time featuring Fendi’s iconic Baguette bag. Featuring A-list influencers, DJs, actresses, and models, the films rejoice friendship along with a love for fashion presented with a ‘quirky and fun’ tone.“Four friends, one city, one Baguette bag! The stage is set for each of the three short movies in Fendi’s new online campaign, entitled #BaguetteFriendsForever. The stories bring together a diverse cast of creative celebrities in Shanghai, Hong Kong and New York. The episodes follow inseparable friends in their sparkling daily routines as they enjoy shopping, lunch at a favorite restaurant and trying on outfits. The real protagonist, though, is the Baguette bag, the ultimate goal of their quest,” says the official release, shared on the LVMH website. As per the release, the films present a very interactive feature, how, the affection of the fans for the bag is expressed and narrated through stories. The bag is portrayed not just as an accessory but a rage that does not die easily. In fact, spreads to different parts of the world in different cities. In Shanghai, the beloved Baguette is believed to be the must accessory for any girls’ night out, on the other in Hong Kong, a bunch of friends search the city to recover the Baguette bag that Hikari Mori, a Japanese top model has lost. In the finale episode, the bag becomes the centre of attraction and an object of everyone’s desire. Leading the pack is Sarah Jessica Parker, star from the cult TV series “Sex and the City,” who exclaims, “This is not a bag, it’s a Baguette!” Her statement almost perfectly sums up the different essence of this eternal accessory, which has been embellished using mirrors, furs or embroideries and other things over the years. The bag with each modification brings forth the enhanced exquisite craftsmanship of Fendi every season.“For the interactive component in the  #BaguetteFriendsForever campaign, Fendi has created a space on its website where Baguette fans can post a personal message illustrated by the Baguette model of their choice and declare their friendship for the people who count most to them,” says the release.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at stills from the films and the bag.   https://www.blouinartinfo.com/              Founder: Louise Blouin

F.P. Journe Showcases Tourbillon Souverain Vertical

With the Tourbillon Souverain Vertical, F.P. Journe is celebrating high precision, and the timeless style that its founder Francois-Paul Journe has cultivated, since he launched his first timepiece in 1999. The company has since then built a reputation as a leading Swiss manufacturer and released several award-winning timepieces. The first Tourbillon Souverain created by Francois-Paul Journe was launched in 1999, and featured a remontoir d’egalite within the wristwatch. The timepiece has since then undergone several iterations and the 2003 new generation version came with a natural deadbeat second. The 20th anniversary of the wristwatch features a tourbillon cage that is vertical — quite different from the horizontal cage that is used traditionally.  Francois-Paul Journe states that the design ensures “functions remain constant whether the watch lies flat or is placed on its side.” The Tourbillon Souverain combines a vertical tourbillon with a remontoir d’egalite, while the deadbeat second is faster than the usual time of one minute and makes one revolution every 30 seconds. The watch has a cone-shaped mirror-polished ring, which surrounds the tourbillon cage and reflects light from it. A rose gold bridge is present along with high quality Clous de Paris guilloche and an enamel hour dial at 3 o’clock. At 12 o’clock there is an 80-hour power reserve while small seconds are positioned at 6 o’clock, and the remontoir d’egalite is at 7 o’clock. The watch has a 42 mm case, which comes in two materials platinum or in 18k 6N gold, and it is powered by a Calibre 1519 manual winding movement.Click on the slideshow to check the timepiece.http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder: Louise Blouin
