Trump administration effort to give campus rapists a free pass sparks its own #MeToo moment

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and the Trump Education Department are working on changing how colleges and universities handle sexual assault and harassment—specifically, they’re trying to make the rules more friendly to rapists and harassers and less supportive of victims. The push to change the Title IX guidelines is in its public comment period and, Madison Pauly reports for Mother Jones, the comments aren't going the Trump administration's way. In over 54,453 comments, survivors are speaking out, telling their stories and sharply questioning specific parts of the proposed rules. For instance, DeVos wants to change the definition of sexual harassment from “unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature” to “unwelcome conduct on the basis of sex that is so severe, pervasive and objectively offensive that it denies a person equal access to the [school’s] education program or activity.” It’s not enough that harassment be sexual and unwelcome; it has to actually prevent the victim from getting an education. But what if, as one survivor wrote, “Despite my attacks, and the depression and anxiety that followed, I was still able to force myself to go to class and try my best”? “Survivors shouldn’t be punished for their resilience and bravery,” she continued.” But that’s just what DeVos wants to do. Activists are seeking to flood the Education Department with more comments before the comment period ends on Jan. 28. To do that, they’re emphasizing paper comments rather than online ones, to force individual rather than computer-generated responses, possibly laying the groundwork for a lawsuit. Betsy DeVos and Team Trump want to give rapists a free pass, but they’re going to face a fight over it.

Fake 'Washington Post' placed around D.C. trolls Trump, claims he is leaving the White House

Fake news has reached a whole new level, with fake copies of The Washington Post popping up all over Washington, D.C. this morning. The print editions look shockingly similar to the real Washington Post. The most interesting part? They are filled with stories about President Donald Trump leaving office. The front page of the paper has a (fake) story that many are hoping will actually come true. With the headline “Unpresidented,” the lead story alleges that Trump resigned from office by writing a note on a napkin while in the Oval Office. What brought this about? This (fake) story declares that “women-led protests” (hi, Women’s March) across the country finally broke him.  He left, supposedly, to head to Yalta.  The Post’s PR department released a statement on Twitter: xThere are fake print editions of The Washington Post being distributed around downtown DC, and we are aware of a website attempting to mimic The Post’s. They are not Post products, and we are looking into this.— Washington Post PR (@WashPostPR) January 16, 2019 Who is behind this brilliantly executed satire? Nobody knows. Many are speculating that Code Pink, a liberal, women-initiated activist group, is behind it, as a video on Facebook shows Medea Benjamin, the group’s founder, passing out copies at an office building at Capitol Hill.

Manafort tried to pack Trump administration with handpicked allies—even after being indicted

Former Trump campaign chair and convicted felon Paul Manafort worked through unknown intermediaries during the Trump transition phase to place people in the new administration, according to a new court filing Tuesday.  Politico reports that former Manafort business partner and Trump deputy campaign manager Rick Gates knew about Manafort's efforts to place people in the Trump administration, and described the hiring scheme to special counsel Robert Mueller. Manafort maintained contact with these “mystery” intermediaries which included a senior administration official into early 2018, well past when he was originally indicted by Mueller in October 2017. But, per usual, the new filings raised more questions than they answered. A slew of redactions keep Manafort's contacts under wraps and it's also unclear exactly how successful his efforts were. But another revelation from Tuesday's court filings suggests more inquiries might be taking place in Mueller Land than previously known. The special counsel sought another delay in Gates' sentencing, noting that he «continues to cooperate with respect to several ongoing investigations.» Several? Now, that's intriguing.

Giuliani confesses on CNN: 'I never said there was no collusion'

The days of “no collusion” aren’t coming to an end. They’re there. Rudy Guiliani, the icebreaker at the prow of S. S. Trumptanic, went on CNN on Wednesday evening to talk with Chris Cuomo. While there, he made yet another of those Giuliani-style confessions, the ones that always seem to test the water as Trump admits to something incrementally—or monumentally—worse than the last round. This time Giuliani moved the line way back into collusion territory. Confronted by the latest evidence against Paul Manafort and others, Giuliani paused in the middle off ranting against the media to complete the long slide that’s been underway since the investigation opened. Giuliani: You just misstated my position. I never said there no collusion between the campaign, or between people in the campaign. Cuomo: Yes you have. Giuliani: I have not. I said the president of the United States. There is not a single bit of evidence the president of the United States committed the only crime you could commit here, conspiring with the Russians to hack the DNC. If Rudy Giuliani had come into the studio wearing a “Trump’s Guilty” sandwich board, he could not have made that point more clearly. For days now, Giuliani has been trying to whittle the Mueller investigation down to whether or not Trump had his fingers on the keyboard when the Russians were hacking the DNC. No one — no one — ever accused Trump of being involved in that action. In fact, that’s just about the only thing in the whole affair where everyone agrees Trump was not involved. Social media coordination? Sure. Distributing stolen information? Of course. Providing the Russians with information to generate maximum damage to America? It’s his forte. But no matter how many times Trump claims to be a technical expert, he does not have a degree in computer science — not even from Trump University.  x«I never said there was no collusion between the campaign or between people in the campaign... I have not. I said the President of the United States,» Pres. Trump’s attorney @RudyGiuliani tells @ChrisCuomo https://t.co/Jy0gttT6Ac pic.twitter.com/JGISmtgrdy— Cuomo Prime Time (@CuomoPrimeTime) January 17, 2019 Not only did Giuliani say that he never said no collusion, later in the interview he claims that Donald Trump never said no collusion.

More victims of Trump's shutdown: marine mammal rescues, environmental data collection

National Geographic brings us still more overlooked effects of the federal government shutdown, focusing on the environmental and scientific damage being done. At this point most are familiar with the overflowing garbage (and human feces) in national parks, but the knowledge that the national volunteer effort to respond to beached or injured marine mammals is on hold due to the shutdown's effects on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is new. And again, the pointless and unnecessary damage to long-term scientific programs is noted. [A]t Shenandoah National Park, in Virginia, a forty-year-long record of acid rain pollution will have its first significant data gap since its inception, because the scientist in charge of collecting samples was barred from entering the park during the shutdown. And at the Hubbard Brook Long Term Ecological Monitoring site in New Hampshire, researchers trying to retrieve monitoring equipment from the far crannies of the park can't reach their tools because their snowmobiles are locked up in Forest Service garages. It is absolutely ridiculous. The shutdown exists and continues because Trump, fuming over new Russia revelations and a trouncing of his captured political party in November, demanded it. An ounce of courage from cowering Republicans could end it at any point. There is no reason a «wall» is any more necessary now than it was during the last two years, when a unified Republican government refused to go along with the boondoggle, and there is no reason to hold 800,000 federal workers and millions of American citizens hostage indefinitely while Trump chews the scenery. It could end tonight, or tomorrow, with Republican votes. It would pass, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell knows full well it would. And yet we continue with these nasty, stupid little games, and the damage to every American not in charge of these things continues—and worsens.

Poll finds massive community support for striking Los Angeles teachers

The Los Angeles teachers strike is now in its third day, and as teachers picket in unusually rainy weather, they’re finding strong community support, including a poll showing that nearly 80 percent of Los Angeles County residents support the teachers. That support was particularly strong among parents of school-aged children. What the teachers are not finding, at least so far, is movement from the school district on the key causes of the strike, including overcrowded classrooms and salaries that have fallen behind the cost of living. Alex Caputo-Pearl, the president of United Teachers Los Angeles, did suggest negotiations might restart soon, telling teachers at one picket line that “We’ll have more information for you later in the day about the bargaining table and when we’re getting back to that bargaining table.” Los Angeles public school teachers aren’t the only ones striking in the city: unionized teachers at the Accelerated Schools charter network are also on strike, in part to support public school teachers.

Last year Jaquet Droz celebrated the 280th anniversary of its foundation, and the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer expanded its existing lineup of watches with new offerings. The clearly visible movement is encased within a black ceramic case that has a diameter of 41.5 mm. A “NAC” coating provides the case with a masculine look and feel and sapphire glass is used for the top and case back to create a “glass box.” While the Jaquet Droz 2663 SQ, self-winding skeleton mechanical movement provides a power reserve of 68 hours.Screws in blue steel are used in fixing the stainless steel hour circle and the sapphire dial helps showcase the company’s watchmaking expertise. The indexes are created from 18K white gold and the same material is used for the oscillating weight, which is also skeletonized. A blue canvas bracelet is paired with the Grande Seconde Skelet-One Ceramic timepiece, making it a perfect representation of the expertise the house has accumulated over centuries of telling time.Click on the slideshow to check the timepiece.http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder: Louise Blouin
