Former House Speaker Paul Ryan lands a top-tier media gig: He's now on the Fox board of directors

When House Speaker Paul Ryan announced that he would be leaving Congress, before the 2018 elections, it was never quite clear just why the tremendously powerful Republican pseudo-wonk had decided to give up the job. Was he simply tired of politics? Did he consider his job done after pushing through a gargantuan deficit-busting tax cut for wealthy Americans, long considered one of his highest priorities? Did he foresee a Republican plastering at the polls and decide he had no interest in being on the losing end of that power struggle? Did he plan to resurface as a lobbyist? Ryan kept quiet the whole time, but as of today we know he at least won't be going hungry (which is good, considering the steps he's taken to reduce food aid for impoverished families). The former congressman has quite the prominent gig set up: He is joining the board of directors of the Fox Corporation. The former speaker of the House will be guiding the parent company of Fox News as the Republican Party and Fox continue to merge into a single conspiracy-and-tirade theme park of grievances. The Ryan appointment is the most noteworthy, given his history near the top of Republican politics. Ryan and Rupert Murdoch have been friendly for many years. In 2014, he named Ryan as a presidential contender he had «particular admiration for.» The Fox Corporation is the end result of the Fox split that saw the vast majority of Fox entertainment assets sold off to Disney; the Fox News Channel and Fox Broadcast Network remain behind, a trimmed-down operation that will continue to be controlled by the Murdoch family. As a board member, Paul Ryan will presumably have at least some input into any change of direction the news network contemplates, whether that change is to more aggressively court the white nationalists served by Tucker Carlson, to push «straight» news anchors into more vigorous defenses of the president, or take your pick. He will be paid handsomely in this role. For starters, we suspect that the «new» Fox News won't be taking any public stands on the revolving door that sees powerful elected officials land high-paying broadcasting jobs between stints on the public payroll. Call it a hunch.

Trump loves to kick people when they're down—like six feet down

Over the weekend, Donald Trump resumed his attacks on deceased Sen. John McCain. But it’s not as if Trump ever quit. From mocking McCain’s time as a prisoner of war, to claiming he was last in his class at Annapolis (he wasn’t), Trump just cannot stop taking digs at McCain. And when McCain’s daughter dared to defend her fallen father, Trump took a slap at her as well.  Because Donald Trump never lets a perceived slight go without striking back, and he never, never ever, forgives. Both in his statements and his actions, Trump has made his personal policy clear: attack those who don’t lavish you with praise, then just keep attacking. That John McCain can’t defend himself from Trump’s attacks doesn’t matter to Trump. In fact, it makes the situation infinitely better. If Trump’s desire to wound everyone who ever failed to bow down at his approach was limited to McCain, that might not represent a great issue. It would still be fundamentally repulsive, but it wouldn’t make a great impact on the nation. But McCain is not a one-off.  The way Trump behaves toward McCain is the way he behaves toward anyone who he ever believed was less than obsequious in his presence. That means that European allies are suffering and NATO is weakened, not just because Trump has, at the very least, a fondness for Vladimir Putin, but because some of those leaders dared actually try to explain to Trump the political realities of their situation and the function of strategic defense. For daring to speak the truth, Trump insults them, demeans their nations, demands payment, and burns the bridges of alliances stretching back 70 years or more. And Trump has not forgotten that he was the butt of jokes at the 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner. What most people would have taking as gentle joshing, Trump took as a mortal insult. It may not have been the origin of his desire to slash and burn his way through everything ever touched by President Barack Obama, but it certainly made those flames a thousand times hotter. On everything from health care to the environment, Trump’s policies have been cemented around not just the idea of pleasing his ‘investors,’ but burning to the ground everything that came from those he regards as enemies.

Supreme Court okays execution of inmate sentenced to death by racist juror

The U.S. Supreme will not take up the death penalty case of Keith Tharpe, a black Georgia death row inmate. He was sentenced to death in 1991 for kidnapping and killing his estranged wife's sister-in-law, Jaqueline Freeman. That death sentence was handed down by a jury including a white juror named Barney Gattie, who made no effort at all to make is racism a secret. Gattie said Tharpe should get the death penalty because he believed there were two types of black people, «regular black folk» and «n****rs.» In his mind, the latter included Tharpe, and that type deserved to die. Despite this blatant racism from a juror, no court has ever heard Tharpe's claim that he was subject to racial bias and now no court ever will. The Supreme Court turned the case away, clearing the state of Georgia to schedule his execution. «Today’s decision from the U.S. Supreme Court takes giant steps backwards from the Court's longstanding commitment to eradicating the pernicious effects of racial discrimination,» Marcy Widder, a lawyer for Tharpe, said in a statement. «What happened in Mr. Tharpe's death penalty case was wrong.» It was wrong, and though the court was unanimous in turning the case away, Justice Sonia Sotomayor made clear in her concurring statement that while she was «profoundly troubled by the underlying facts of the case,» the court had to make its decision based on a procedural issue—whether the racial bias claim was made in a timely manner. That delay was in part caused by the state of Georgia itself. By the time his case made it to the 11th Circuit court of appeals in 2010, the court decided that the delays caused by the state meant that his racial bias claim wasn't raised early enough to be taken into consideration. In 2018, the case came back before the 11th Circuit after a Supreme Court stay of execution. The lower court decided again that Tharpe was barred from raising the racial bias claim. That reconsideration done, the Supreme Court wouldn't take the claim on. America, where white supremacists can still kill people of color and do it with the approval of the Supreme Court.

Liberal healthcare group ties Trump's hypocrisy on Medicare and Medicaid to vulnerable Republicans

One of the progressive activist groups that was instrumental in organizing to defeat Trumpcare is now taking on Individual 1 and his supporters in Congress for the cuts to Medicare and Medicaid in this year's White House budget. Protect Our Care is starting a cable TV and online campaign pointing out Trump's campaign lie that he wouldn't cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The five-figure ad buy is against four Republican senators up for re-election in 2020—Susan Collins (ME), Martha McSally (AZ), Cory Gardner (CO), and Thom Tillis (NC)—and six House Republicans in potential swing districts. «Trump is turning his back on seniors and families—proposing over two trillion dollars in cuts to Medicare and Medicaid,» the ad says. «Breaking his promise. Slashing our health care to the bone. And for what? Tax breaks for the wealthiest corporations.» The latest White House spokesperson you've probably never heard of, Judd Deere, says the budget doesn't cut Medicare, but is «saving it» with «necessary reforms» that would actually likely make it harder for Medicare beneficiaries to find providers for the care they need. The $846 billion in Medicare cuts would end up making it difficult for some seniors to access care, and would require Medicare beneficiaries to get prior approval for certain medical services—which have not been specified—that the administration says are ripe for waste and fraud. Note that Deere doesn't respond at all to the charge that the the budget would cut Medicaid. In truth, it essentially envisions destroying the program by turning it into a block grant that would allow it to more easily wither away and die. To the tune of $1.5 trillion in cuts over 10 years. But Trump and the administration don't care about Medicaid or the people who are getting care through the program, so they don't even bother to defend those cuts. This isn’t a real, actionable budget Nothing in it binds Congress, but it is extremely important in laying out Trump’s vision for America, a vision that Republican lawmakers seem to pretty much embrace. That’s Trump’s gift to Democrats—an albatross to hang around Republicans’ collective neck.
