Open thread for night owls: Sanders's $15 minimum-wage bill could set Democratic standard for 2020

Marc Daalder at In These Times writes—Why Every Democrat In Congress Should Support Bernie Sanders’ $15 Minimum Wage Bill: On Friday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced that when the new Congress convenes in January, he will reintroduce his bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. The current version of the legislation would gradually increase the minimum wage, until it reaches $15 an hour in 2024. While the bill almost certainly won’t make it past the Republican-controlled Senate, it signals the sort of difference progressives can make if they seize power in 2020. Although right-wing critics of raising the federal minimum wage often point to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) figure quoted above—1.8 million—as evidence that only around 4 percent of workers will be helped by a wage hike, this is misleading. The BLS statistic doesn’t take into account the people in states with a minimum wage above the federal standard. These residents of 29 states and Washington, D.C., represent more than half the country’s population and are left out of the 1.8 million figure. Moreover, a vast number of people work for less than $15 an hour, even if they earn above minimum wage. According to Census Bureau data, 40.2 million hourly workers earned at or below $14.63 an hour in 2017. In 2016, according to the Pew Research Center, 20.6 million people earned less than $10.10 an hour but above minimum wage in their state. All of these workers would benefit from the wage bump Sanders’ bill would provide. The bill would greatly benefit black and brown communities, as minimum wage workers are disproportionately people of color. These workers also tend to be paid less, on average. The median wage for black hourly workers is $12.90 and the median for Latino workers is $13.16, while the median for white workers is $14.89. [...] This legislation could help anchor a progressive agenda platform for the new class of left-leaning Democrats in Congress. Raising the minimum wage is a consistently popular idea: In 2016, Pew found 58 percent of people supported a $15 wage, while Quinnipiac found 54 percent support in 2017. It’s also a policy that voters are familiar with. Seeing Democrats get on board with a minimum wage bump would show that they stand on the side of working people, drawing a clear line in the sand with Trump and members of the GOP who would rather get rid of the federal minimum wage altogether. [...] TOP COMMENTS • HIGH IMPACT STORIES TWEET OF THE DAY xUnpacked our Nativity scene yesterday. Removed all the Jews, Arabs, and foreigners. Ended up with a jackass and a handful of sheep.— 🇺🇸🌊JoeInWV 🌊🇺🇸 (@wvjoe911) November 17, 2018 BLAST FROM THE PAST On this date at Daily Kos in 2013—No, food stamps don’t cause obesity: A recent story in the Washington Post provided a look at the cheap food options affordable on a food stamp budget, and the health problems and obesity that diet causes. All well and good, but reporter Eli Saslow's big question was «Has the massive growth of a government feeding program solved a problem, or created one?» The chain of thought that got him to that question: Hidalgo County has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation ... which has led almost 40 percent of residents to enroll in the food-stamp program . . . which means a widespread reliance on cheap, processed foods ... which results in rates of diabetes and obesity that double the national average ... which fuels the country’s highest per-capita spending on health care. This is some messed-up logic. Seriously messed up. Let's do a thought experiment and take food stamps away from poor people who are currently using them to buy cheap, processed foods. Is there a scenario in which those people buy more expensive, healthier food, having lost the benefits that are currently providing much of their food budgets? The reason people are relying on cheap, processed foods is not that people's food budgets are coming from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—heaven knows it's not like it's a program requirement that benefits be spent on junk food—it's that they are poor. Maybe they live in food deserts. Maybe they don't have the kitchen facilities to keep or cook fresh foods—one woman portrayed in the story doesn't have a fridge. But whatever you can say about the diets of food stamp recipients, poverty, not food stamps, is the starting point. Bodycams, dash cams, cell phone cameras—they’re the tools we use to hold police accountable these days. But too often, the footage shows violence already inflicted upon citizens, and it’s far too late to help the victims. Not so with the case of Grace McKinnon, 24, a licensed social worker who, armed with only her phone, her professional training, and a wealth of basic human decency, appears to have singlehandedly saved a fellow citizen from death by cop. It all began on the afternoon of November 7, in Washington, D.C. McKinnon [...] was on her way back to her office [...] when she said she noticed a confrontation occurring between U.S. Capitol Police officers and a homeless man by the name of Anthony Williams. She immediately stopped her car, got out and began recording. “I knew I had to help,” McKinnon told The Root. “I saw it happen. I had to get involved.” What happens next is hard to watch, but a beautiful example of what de-escalation can do. What compassion can do. What love can do.

Nuts & Bolts: Inside a Democratic campaign—how much credit do organizations deserve?

It’s another Saturday, so for those who tune in, welcome to a Saturday Diary of Nuts & Bolts of a Democratic Campaign. If you’ve missed out, you can catch up anytime, just visit our group or follow Nuts & Bolts Guide. Until the new year, I’m taking the next few weeks to reach into the mailbag and answer questions that have come my way that I think probably should get an answer. This week, we’re going to talk about campaign credit. A frequent question that comes my way is that after a campaign is over people look to lay credit or assess blame in a campaign. How exactly does campaign credit work? How influential or detrimental are party organizations?

New Hampshire Democrats set to oust secretary of state notorious for backing GOP voter suppression

While the position of secretary of state is directly elected in most states, in New Hampshire it’s chosen by the members of the state legislature. And with Democrats winning back both the state Senate and House in the Granite State last week, lawmakers are now poised to pick an excellent candidate who's devoted to protecting and expanding voting rights, Democrat Colin Van Ostern. Indeed, state House Democrats just held an informal party caucus vote where they overwhelmingly said they’d back Van Ostern over incumbent Bill Gardner, who has been in office since 1976. Though nominally a Democrat, Gardner eagerly served on Donald Trump's bogus voter fraud commission and has backed multiple voter suppression laws targeting college students that Republican legislators passed after they took control of state government following the 2016 elections. That betrayal cost Gardner the bipartisan support he had long enjoyed, leading top Democrats to rally around Van Ostern as a far better alternative. Now the bill has come due. After flipping both chambers, New Hampshire Democrats now have a 14-10 edge in the Senate and 234 out of 400 seats in the House—the second-largest majority they’ve ever held since the foundation of the Republican Party in the 1850s. As a result, Democrats will have a 248-176 advantage when both chambers vote in a joint session early next month to elect a new secretary of state. On the basis of this straw poll, which Van Ostern won 129-23 over Gardner (with a third candidate taking 7 votes), Van Ostern could afford to lose up to 35 Democratic votes and still attain the 213 votes he needs to prevail, since Republican legislators are likely to continue backing Gardner. While that vote total still leaves Van Ostern short of a majority, it doesn't include the Senate. In addition, a number of Democrats didn't participate, and several races are still uncalled, so this demonstration of support shows Van Ostern has a good shot at winning. Van Ostern is a strong advocate for policies to make voting easier and more accessible in an effort to boost turnout. He supports automatic voter registration, a bipartisan independent redistricting commission, a ban on corporate donations to state campaigns, and rolling back Republicans' suppression of student voters. By contrast, Gardner fought to implement a GOP-backed anti student voter law even in defiance of a court order this fall, and removing him from office would finally give New Hampshire a chief elections official who is committed to voting rights.
