Terry McAuliffe won't run for president, saying it's more important to flip Virginia's legislature

Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced on Wednesday evening that he would not join the Democratic presidential primary, explaining that he feels duty-bound to help flip his state’s closely divided—but Republican-held—legislature this fall. McAuliffe noted that Virginia has «had a lot of problems» since February, when twin scandals engulfed Gov. Ralph Northam and Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax. Ordinarily, a party's top statewide officials would be busy raising money to support their legislative candidates, but as this infographic vividly shows, Northam and Fairfax have been rendered impotent pariahs. Northam in fact has only raised $2,500 since his blackface debacle unfolded, something McAuliffe specifically cited in an interview with the New York Times. McAuliffe is also setting an example other presidential hopefuls (would-be and actual) should follow. This week, Beto O’Rourke campaigned in Virginia on behalf of Democrats running for the legislature, saying, «We want to do everything we can to help you by bringing attention and focus, within the commonwealth and from without, on the importance of these next elections.» But it’s not just Virginia: Democrats need to focus on down-ballot elections everywhere. That includes the Senate, the House, state legislatures, and state supreme courts, too. Even if we beat Donald Trump in the race for the White House, we can only roll back the plague of Trumpism by winning power at every other level, too. Terry McAuliffe grasps that, and so should every other leader in the Democratic Party.

Open thread for night owls: Two big differences among Democratic presidential candidates on climate

Zoya Teirstein at Grist writes—Here’s where all the official Democratic presidential candidates stand on climate: So far, 18 Democrats have announced bids to tussle with Donald Trump for the presidency in 2020, with more expected to throw their caps in the ring. In such a crowded field, it’s hard to decipher where each candidate stands on any issue, including climate change — a topic that was conspicuously absent in the 2016 election but appears will be front and center this time around. Luckily, The New York Times sent around a survey to each of the 18 declared Democratic candidates and got them all on the record about everything from a carbon tax to nuclear energy to renewables. There are a few things that all of the candidates seem to agree on: The U.S. should stay in the Paris climate accord, reinstate President Obama’s climate legacy (which has suffered under Trump’s deregulation push), and invest in renewable energy. Some candidates said they would go even further in one or more of those issue areas, by adding their own flourishes to Obama’s Clean Power Plan or promising to work with the global community to strengthen the Paris pact. Taking a look at where the candidates diverge yields a much more interesting analysis. Though there are many small distinctions between the 18 presidential hopefuls on climate policy, there are two issues where there is meaningful daylight between candidates.  A carbon tax [...] Nuclear energy [...]  Indivisible’s list of Resistance Events & Groups TOP COMMENTS • HIGH IMPACT STORIES QUOTATION “In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand fold in the future. With every week of insurgency in a war zone with no front, these companies are becoming more deeply enmeshed in combat, in some cases all but obliterating distinctions between professional troops and private commandos. Company executives see a clear boundary between their defensive roles as protectors and the offensive operations of the military. But more and more, they give the appearance of private, for-profit militias—by several estimates, a force of roughly 20,000 on top of an American military presence of 130,000... The price of this partnership is soaring. By some recent government estimates, security costs could claim up to 25 percent of the $18 billion budgeted for reconstruction, a huge and mostly unanticipated expense that could delay or force the cancellation of billions of dollars worth of projects to rebuild schools, water treatment plants, electric lines and oil refineries... The authority initially estimated that security costs would eat up about 10 percent of the $18 billion in reconstruction money approved by Congress, said Capt. Bruce A. Cole of the Navy, a spokesman for the authority's program management office. But after months of sabotage and insurgency, some officials now say a much higher percentage will go to security companies that unblushingly charge $500 to $1,500 a day for their most skilled operators...  On today’s Kagro in the Morning show: Come on. What do you think it's about today? OK, well, Greg Dworkin did also have some polls. And some interesting analysis of the real «Kavanaugh effect,» (the opposite of what pundits and consultants said it would be). Investigators incorporate randomized trial within dialysis care delivery

The Time to Reduce Mortality in ESRD (TiME) trial was a large pragmatic trial demonstration project designed to determine the benefits of hemodialysis sessions that are longer than many patients currently receive. The trial was conducted through a partnership between academic investigators and 2 large dialysis provider organizations using a highly centralized implementation approach. Although the trial accomplished most of its demonstration project objectives, uptake of the intervention was insufficient to determine whether longer sessions improve outcomes.

Nendo, the Bouroullecs and Patricia Urquiola Launch New Lamps with Flos

As part of Flos’ extensive 50th anniversary collection, lightingsuspended from belts and lamps were launched at this year’s Salone del Mobile, reports dezeen. The lighting brand included a number of designers such as MichaelAnastassiades, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Antonio Citterio, Formafantasma,Piero Lissoni, Nendo, Philippe Starck, and Patricia Urquiola for the 2019collections. Pieces shown by the brand also included two reissues – the Chiaralamp by Mario Bellini from the 1960s, and a re-release of the first edition ofthe brand’s Bulbo lamp – a 1957 design by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. In the latest Flos collections, exhibited as part of Design Holdingfor the first time at their mammoth Salone del Mobile stand, the new furnitureand lighting group showcased its brands in three distinctive areas of anall-white, 4,000-square-meter stand designed by Calvi Brambilla.Formafantasma’s WireLine is made of an LED light source within aribbed glass extrusion and supported by long flat pink rubber cable designed tolook like belts. “The lamp plays on the contrast between the industrial feeling ofthe rubber and the sophistication of glass,” explained Formafantasma foundersAndrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin. Mushroom-esque light fixtures arecombined with tabletops in Haeru – a modular lighting system by Tokyo designstudio Nendo. Haeru (meaning to grow in Japanese) consists of eight parts intotal: three types of tables, two types of light fixtures, and three supportinglegs that can be used to create custom configurations. “The basic structure ofthe object is made of a three-legged table with a built-in battery. Two of thelegs are cut shorter, thus allowing the user to change and add light fixturesand tabletops depending on their preference,” explained Nendo. Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have also created Belt, a suspendedlighting system with an unusual suspension element. The designers have createda system that connects leather-wrapped linear LED lighting modules with softand flexible leather belts secured by buckles. “All the elements are uniformlymade of leather belts. Some of them carry the weight, some of them carryelectricity, then of course some of them carry the light,” the designersexplained. Patricia Urquiola has created an outdoor lamp called Caule and a wall lamp called Flauta, which is available in different heights and configurations and inspired by the structure of a flower. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/              Founder: Louise Blouin

Rolex Padellone to be Offered for Sale at Phillips’ Upcoming Sale

Rolex Padellone (with ref. 8171) — a large, attractive and exceptionally well-preserved triple calendar wristwatch with moonphases and two-tone dial, original box and numbered hang tag — will be offered at Phillips’ upcoming auction, titled “The Geneva Watch Auction: Nine.” The auction will take place on May 11-12, 2019, in Geneva, and the present watch will be featured in lot 68 at the auction with a pre-auction estimate of 403,000 USD - 806,000 USD. “Reference 8171 is lovingly dubbed ‘Padellone’ — which translates to ‘a large frying pan’ in Italian. Boasting a generous 38 mm case, it is slightly larger than its waterproof Oyster sibling, reference 6062. Both references 8171 and 6062 were the only two vintage Rolex models with moonphases, giving them a mythical reputation and cult-like following. Produced for a very short period of time in the early 1950s, reference 8171 and 6062 were available in yellow gold, pink gold, and stainless steel. Quite likely one of the greatest and best preserved yellow gold reference 8171 to surface on the market in recent years, this timepiece is an absolutely exceptional specimen. Displaying completely original lines, curves, and finishes, it best demonstrates the genesis and factory specifications of the mythical reference. The bezel is overwhelmingly crisp and displays a bevel at the base that would have instantly disappeared with polishing. Of particular note is that sharp Rolex coronet and case number that is visible and immediately legible on the caseback, attesting to the untouched nature of this timepiece. Furthermore, a deep and sharp hallmark is visible on the bottom of the lug,” states the auction house. The present watch was manufactured circa 1950 and it is made of 18K yellow gold. It has an original Rolex alligator strap and an 18K yellow gold Rolex buckle. As mentioned by Phillips, the watch is accompanied by Rolex original hang tag, and presentation box. An artwork representing this timepiece as found on the back cover of this catalog will be offered to the winning bidder. The auction house further comments, “As with all ‘Padellone’ watches, the beauty lies in the dial. Those in original condition, such as this one, are few and far between and appear infrequently on the market. This particular example is best characterized as extraordinary. The dial is undeniably original. The sharp track where the moonphase aperture meets the rim of the subsidiary dial is incredibly precise and correct. One would expect to see significant spotting to the dial considering that this watch is not waterproof and has a snap on caseback. Yet, it remains clear of blemishes. Furthermore, the two-tone design is unmistakable and the ‘Officially Certified Chronometer’ script is visible and crisp.” https://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder: Louise Blouin
