Two weeks before the 'healthcare' midterm, Trump doubles down on sabotaging Obamacare

The squatter in the Oval Office is lying to America, two weeks before an election in which the major issue for voters is either getting or keeping their health insurance. «All Republicans,» Trump tweeted last week, «support people with preexisting conditions […] if they don't, they will after I speak to them.» That while his own Justice Department is suing his own government (yes, that is fucked up) to declare that the protections for people with preexisting conditions in the Affordable Care Act are unconstitutional. Republican leadership in Congress, in fact, is still running on Obamacare repeal. Mitch McConnell promises that if enough Republicans win in two weeks to increase their majority, it's going to happen. They're pretending like they have a plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, to make sure everyone with preexisting conditions is protected, but they've been promising that since 2010. If they really meant it, if they had any intention of putting a plan in place, they'd leave the ACA in place while they «reformed» it. Instead, the administration is upping the sabotage. On Monday, it announced new «flexibility» for states to push junk health insurance plans that flout the law, but that will be eligible for subsidies under the law. Republican states will be able to push people into cheaper plans with skimpy benefits. While they would still have to make sure that plans that have the full range of benefits required by law are available in the state, those plans will likely be too expensive for many. We're going to be back where we were before the ACA passed, with sick people unable to afford the coverage they need and people losing everything when a catastrophic accident or illness that's not covered hits. As House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said in a statement after the new waiver was announced, «Every day, Republicans further expose their brutal agenda to destroy Americans' health care,. […] President Trump is once again cynically pushing families into shoddy junk plans that can discriminate against pre-existing conditions and that do not cover essential health benefits, while making dependable health coverage more expensive for everyone else.» There's a pending lawsuit against the administration filed by seven health organizations to try to stop one of Trump's sabotages, expanding short-term, limited-duration insurance plans—which with Monday's waiver announcement can now be offered on state exchange for subsidies—to last as long as three years. Insurers can deny coverage, charge more based on age, or gender, or health status and that violates the law. In the meantime, though, there's just one answer to Trump's ongoing sabotage: elect as many Democrats up and down the slate as possible. That means state legislators, governors, U.S. representatives, and U.S. senators. This is war, and it has to be on multiple fronts, in the courts, the Congress, and the states. Trump dials up the racism in his constant stream of lies

Every time you think they can’t go lower, Donald Trump and the Republican Party manage it. Trump’s claim that there are “unknown Middle Easterners” in a migrant caravan coming from Central America forced the New York Times to give its thesaurus a real workout. The newspaper described that as “a dark and factually baseless warning,” an “unsubstantiated charge,” and an “apparently groundless inclusion,” while noting that “Trump suggested without any proof that the opposition was involved in instigating the caravan.” Invaluable Trump-lie-tracker Daniel Dale wrote that: Trump’s dishonesty careened into the realm of absurdity on the weekend. At a rally in Arizona on Friday, he half-jokingly said that since many Democrats are willing to give driver’s licences to unauthorized immigrants, “next thing you know they’ll want to buy ’em a car.” At his Nevada rally on Saturday, he asserted that Democrats already do want this: “They want to give ’em cars.” But the Times pointed out, Trump is not alone. The Republican Party is right there with him in its racist attacks on African American Democratic candidates like Florida’s Andrew Gillum and New York’s Antonio Delgado and Texas’s Colin Allred, by “accusing Democrats, without evidence, of going soft on MS-13, a Latin American gang that Mr. Trump regularly depicts as a national menace.” It’s a politics of fear, and the fear Republicans are trying to stoke and exploit is explicitly racist. Trump may be the loudest, but his party is playing the same tune. Get out the vote: Join the MoveOn text team. Double your impact: Can you chip in $1 to help take back the House and Senate?

Saudi conference opens with special visitor from the US as Turkish president reveals murder details

If the multiple announcements from companies publicly pulling out of the Future Investment conference in Saudi Arabia made it seem as if crown prince Mohammed bin Salman might be feeling a little lonely this week … nope. Not only do Saudi journalists report that most of those same companies quietly sent top executives along to the conference anyway, bin Salman had a very special guest on Monday in the form of Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. Meanwhile, Turkish president Recep Erdoğan gave a speech on Tuesday morning in which he revealed more details about the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. As TIME reports, Mnuchin paid a visit on the Saudi royal at the start of the conference, letting him know that just because bin Salman had a pesky journalist slaughtered, the United States under Donald Trump doesn’t hold it against him. Following the murder of Khashoggi, Mnuchin had announced that he would still be attending the Future Investment conference. Then a few days later as opposition mounted around the world, Mnuchin declared he would not be going. But the truth turns out to be … he went anyway. Only “quietly.”  The White House did not announce Mnuchin’s travel plans, and hasn’t posted any images or statements from the visit. However, the Saudi foreign ministry did tweet out a picture of Mnuchin sitting down with bin Salman. Possibly to discuss how the US can get in on future bone saw orders. Though Saudi reports indicate that the purpose to was “reassure the Saudi leadership” that the US values their relationship. Which is not at all reassuring to those who rate preserving the First Amendment over keeping the guy who has Jared Kushner “in his pocket” happy. In a speech on Tuesday morning, the New York Times reported that Turkish president Erdoğan spoke at length on Khashoggi’s murder, giving out more details from Turkish intelligence. According to Erdoğan, the operation to capture and kill Khashoggi was planned well in advance, and the team that came to Istanbul wasn’t limited to the 15 operatives who pounced on Khashoggi when he entered the consulate. Some of them arrived days in advance, conducted reconnaissance of areas around Istanbul and surrounding rural location, and included generals in the team. Though Saudi reports were keen to show attendance at the investment summit and ran video of the opening ceremony showing a packed room, other reports indicate that once the cameras were off, other sessions are much less well attended. Some reports have indicated that bin Salman is “giving up on the West” and is preparing to announce more investment deals with China and Chinese firms. But, like Mnuchin, a lot of Western companies seem to be present “quietly,” wanting to give consumers the impression that they’re concerned about Khashoggi’s murder, while still demonstrating their loyalty to bin Salman.

89 days past federal judge's deadline, migrant kids are still separated from their parents

Tuesday, October 23, marks 89 days since a federal judge’s reunification order, yet dozens of migrant children kidnapped from their parents at the border continue to remain under U.S. custody, according to recent numbers from the administration. Of these 66 children, one is aged 5 or under. Of the 66 kids, the parents of 50 have already been deported. Trump officials have struggled to reunite kids with deported parents because of their own cruelty, after having ripped apart families with no plan set in place on how to reunite them. But even kids who are being moved for reunification continue to be traumatized—earlier this month, officials returned a 4 year old to her home country without first informing her parents: Instead of reuniting with her deported father, whom she hadn’t seen since they crossed the U.S. border together six months ago, the child spent yet another night in a government-run shelter, according to Kids In Need of Defense, an organization helping the U.S. government to reunify families. Now, as 66 kids remain separated—and the administration has a record number of migrant kids in detention, the vast majority of them vulnerable minors who came here by themselves—Trump is floating officially reviving family separation as a midterms strategy to rile up his racist base, and because White House aide and white supremacist Stephen Miller likes it. We can’t let this happen again. GET OUT THE VOTE for migrant kids who need a voice. Just click here, enter your zip code, choose the event that works best for you, and RSVP to attend. Don't let up the pressure. Can you give $1 to Beto O’Rourke and other Daily Kos-endorsed candidates for Senate and House?

Stop GOP voter suppression before it starts by supporting these women running for state legislatures

Just this past week, Daily Kos shattered expectations by raising over half a million dollars to counter the impact of North Dakota Republicans’ voter ID law—a measure that directly targets the state’s Native voters by effectively invalidating a form of identification used by thousands. GOP lawmakers were behind the passage of this voter suppression law in the first place, and their counterparts in states across the country have passed measures similarly targeting voters who tend to cast their ballots for Democrats. From onerous registration and voting requirements in Michigan aimed at college students and voter ID rules specifically “target[ing] African Americans with almost surgical precision” in North Carolina to strict ID requirements and limits on early voting days and locations impacting voters of color in Wisconsin, Republican state legislators have toiled tirelessly over the past decade to make voting more difficult in states all across the country. Fighting these new laws with lawsuits and voter organization efforts can help counter their suppressive effects, but even when these measures are successful, they’re often palliative at best. But you know how the saying goes: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It’s time to stop voter suppression where it starts: at the state legislative level. We can do this by stripping Republicans of their majorities in statehouses. To this end, Daily Kos is excited to announce our endorsement of 12 women running in five key statehouses where Republicans are vulnerable.
