Open thread for night owls. Reich: Economy in much worse shape than it appears

20 days remain until the final votes are cast in the midterms Robert Reich at TruthDig writes—The Economy Is in Much Worse Shape Than It Looks: I keep hearing that although Donald Trump is a scoundrel or worse, at least he’s presiding over a great economy. As White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow recently put it, “The single biggest story this year is an economic boom that is durable and lasting.” Really? Look closely at the living standards of most Americans, and you get a very different picture. Yes, the stock market has boomed since Trump became president. But it’s looking increasingly wobbly as Trump’s trade wars take a toll. Over 80 percent of the stock market is owned by the richest 10 percent of Americans anyway, so most Americans never got much out of Trump’s boom to begin with. The trade wars are about to take a toll on ordinary workers. Trump’s steel tariffs have cost Ford $1 billion so far, for example, forcing the automaker to plan mass layoffs. What about economic growth? Data from the Commerce Department shows the economy at full speed, 4.2 percent growth for the second quarter. But very little of that growth is trickling down to average Americans. Adjusted for inflation, hourly wages aren’t much higher now than they were forty years ago. Trump slashed taxes on the wealthy and promised everyone else a $4,000 wage boost. But the boost never happened. That’s a big reason why Republicans aren’t campaigning on their tax cut, which is just about their only legislative accomplishment. Last week there were rumors that the NRSC was going to pull out of Schaffer's campaign for the Colorado Senate seat being vacated by Wayne Allard. That speculation is confirmed today. Mark Udall, has been posting consistent leads in polling for the last month, probably one reason a cash-strapped NRSC has decided to retrench and defend other seats. It's not just the NRSC that have been scared off. «Independent» 527s, are also pulling out, looking to Oregon and North Carolina to try to salvage a few Republican incumbents. Denver's Casa de Paz welcomes newly released migrants with fresh clothes, food and compassion

Sarah Jackson said she was “just living my perfect little life” when she went with her church to visit the U.S./Mexico border eight years ago. “I didn’t know immigrant detention centers existed … it was not even a blip on my radar.” It would become a trip that could not only change the course of her life, but the lives of many others. She just didn’t know it yet. For six years, Jackson has operated Casa de Paz—House of Peace—offering recently released Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees “a place to stay as well as food, clothing and transportation. It is also Jackson’s home, and guests are treated like family.” Outside, there’s no signage on the two story house in order to attract as little negative attention as possible. Inside, guests are welcomed with fresh clothes—“guests are released from the detention center wearing the outfit they were arrested in”—nutritious food, toiletries, even cell phones. Jackson’s has welcomed more than 1,400 people from nearly two dozen countries over the years, and guests can stay for up to three days. Oftentimes, they already have relatives in the United States they are “eager to meet up with,” The Guardian reports. But even three days can make all the difference for a vulnerable asylum seeker leaving traumatic detention. “Most of us who have passed through the border and the detention centre have a bad impression of America and are not expecting any good from anybody,” an African asylum seeker currently staying at Casa de Paz told The Guardian. “You are released into this strange place with no money in a country that has treated you poorly. Then you have this home where there’s free food, clothes, everything.” Jackson, “who has a day job selling software to churches,” has raised funds for Casa de Paz through volleyball tournaments, as well as relying on donations and volunteers. “Jackson is about a third of the way through raising $400,000 to buy a bigger house next to the detention center. Without rent to pay, the money from the volleyball league can go towards paying someone to staff the house all day, which will allow Casa de Paz to help more people.” She credits her visit to the border long ago, along with hearing the stories of vulnerable people who fled their home countries for their lives, with pushing her in her mission to welcome the stranger with dignity and respect. “Over and over the Bible talks about treating the sojourner or immigrant as one of your own,” she said. “That’s not how we treat our own.”

The press bites back: Organization sues Trump to protect media from unconstitutional restrictions

PEN America is a New York nonprofit dedicated to promoting creative expression and defending the rights upon which it’s predicated: freedoms of speech and press. Its members range from journalistic to literary to media professionals. There’s no shortage of issues for the organization to tackle, especially now, but PEN’s “bedrock work” is “long-term advocacy on behalf of individual writers who are being punished because of their work.” They take exception to Trump’s war against the press. Represented by Protect Democracy and the Yale Law School Media Freedom and Information Access Clinic, PEN America is moving beyond criticism to legal complaint. They’re asking a federal district court, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, to declare Trump’s retaliatory actions unconstitutional under the First Amendment and to block Trump from retaliating or directing retaliation against someone based on their speech.  Their challenge is meaningful, as the organization was founded in 1948. It’s also nonpartisan. PEN “forcefully raised concerns about free expression infringements during the Obama, Bush, and other prior administrations.” Trump’s not even the first president PEN has sued. It’s a pretty complaint. PEN takes care to catalogue Trump’s verbal attacks on the press (“disgusting,” etc.), then notes that these comments, while anti-democratic, are not the basis for this suit. The problem is, they point out, that he has threatened to engage, and he has engaged, in conduct intended to retaliate against specific news organizations and journalists he disagrees with. PEN says Trump’s retaliatory measures against Amazon—motivated by a desire to strike at founder Jeff Bezos, also owner of the Washington Post—have included criticizing Amazon in a way that affected its stock, telling USPS to re-evaluate its rates for Amazon, and personally directing the head of USPS to double rates for Amazon and its ilk.  Trump has also openly referred to his vendetta against CNN.

Banksy’s artworld shocker performance piece, earlier this month, when a canvas of his went under the hammer at Sothebys in London, suggests not. Immediately the Girl with Balloon canvas sold — for a cool ~$1.1M (£860,000) — it proceeded to self-destruct, via a shredder built into […]
