Open thread for night owls: 'Only with Trump did they begin to reconsider their roles'

Washington Post book critic Carlos Lozada surveys the recent spate of mea culpas by conservatives alarmed at Trump’s rise and conservatism’s fall, and comes away unimpressed. “The Never Trumpers hold everyone culpable for the appeal of Trumpism except, in any worthwhile way, themselves.” With these books, the Never Trumpers are engaging in a worthy exercise, even if it’s one they are executing with varying degrees of consistency, clarity and introspection. Yet it took the nomination and election of Donald Trump to make it happen. In a sense, the Never Trumpers are also the Only Trumpers. Only with the rise of Trump did they even think to interrogate the conservative dogma they’d long defended. Only with Trump did they begin to reconsider their roles in feeding a frenzied base. Only with Trump did they see the need to reach for higher ideals. Had Trump come close but failed to win the 2016 Republican nomination, had the GOP establishment and donor networks eked out one more mainstream nominee while still capitalizing on the angry, conspiratorial base to run against the Democrats, these books would not exist. The conscience and corrosion of conservatism, the mind of the right, would remain unexamined. TOP COMMENTS • HIGH IMPACT STORIES • THE WEEK’S HIGH IMPACT STORIES TWEET OF THE DAY xFirst Trump made money from his campaign. Then he made money from his inauguration. Now he's making money from his presidency. So he must already be thinking about how he can get a quick buck out of his impeachment.— Victor Laszlo (@Impolitics) December 16, 2018 BLAST FROM THE PAST On this date at Daily Kos in 2005—The Islamic Republic of Iraq: I wonder why the war boosters think elections are in and of themselves a reason to declare «mission accomplished» (yet again) in Iraq. What good are elections if the violence continues? What good are they if Iraq's infrastructure is in shambles? What good are they if Iraq's economy continues to founder. «Wait!» the triumphalists will interject, «Elections show that Iraqis want democracy, and democracy will work to reduce the violence.» Of course, lots of things were supposed to reduce the violence—Saddam's capture, the first elections, the second election, the capture of myriad «Al Qaida number twos,» the supposed training of a new Iraqi army, and so on. Forgive those of us underwhelmed by such rosy predictions. Reality has made a mockery of all previous expressions of optimism. But I wonder, would the triumphalists still think this last round of elections was a success if it brought to power a fundamentalist Islamic party with strong ties to Iran? Because that's what appears to be happening. Funny that -- we've expended hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of lives to give Iran what they most coveted -- a friendly Iraqi government. And the wingnutosphere is celebrating. Feeling 'regrexit,' the UK needs a Brexit exit

Let’s face it, United Kingdom: The dream of separating from the European Union has blown up. Hold a new referendum to stay in the EU, and vote the correct way this time around. Many in the U.K. are having serious second thoughts about the 2016 vote to leave the European Union—not unlike the way at least some Donald Trump voters are realizing they made a big mistake in November 2016. The results of the June 2016 Brexit referendum were surprising, as many polls suggested that the “Remain” supporters outnumbered those on the “Leave” side, albeit slightly. But the vote on Brexit went the other way, 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent.  Leave and Remain voters were divided by age and geography. Younger voters voted heavily to remain, while older voters chose the leave option. London voted strongly to remain, as did those in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Voters in other parts of Britain, such as Wales and northern cities, wanted out of the EU. Many votes were based on faux populism, perceived inequality, fear of immigrants, and complaints about too much government spending—in this case, by the European Union. (Sound familiar?) Never mind the fact that leaders of the Leave campaign have admitted that many of their statements about the EU and the benefits of leaving it were outright lies. Never mind that much of the Leave campaign was driven by Russia. Never mind that there was no methodology for how to leave. Never mind that “What is the EU?” became one of the most-Googled queries in the U.K. after the vote. No matter. The vote to leave won over the vote to remain. But it’s not the way the majority of people in the U.K. feel now. There is now sentiment for a do-over.

Dear Republicans, we need to talk . . .

Hey Republicans, we need to talk. On Tuesday, your lame duck Congress dragged Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, in front of one of your endless committees in which you play the victim. Whining about how you are portrayed in the media, and in google searches of all things. In short, you are once again working the refs.  Look, I get it, once in a while a ref makes a bad call. Bad calls robbed the Packers of a couple of victories this year, and likely cost the coach his job. But, I did not see the Packers holding public hearings questioning the rule book, and how it is interpreted, or do I see fired coach Mike McCarthy sounding off on the head of NBA officiating complaining about NFL rules.  You have been doing this since I was a kid in the seventies. You don’t like how your policies, statements, or even your elected officials are portrayed in the news. But have you ever thought for a second that the problem is not the media? Maybe it is the things you say, the policies you enact, and the way your politicians talk.  On Tuesday, Representative Steve King (R-IA), a racist, spouted off about his iPhone (to a Google exec), King said his 7-year-old granddaughter was playing a game on her phone before an election — most likely King's November 2018 reelection bid — and was shown a picture of the congressman that included some not-so-flattering language. «I'm not going to say into the record what kind of language was used around that picture of her grandfather,» he said. Then, holding up his Apple device, King asked Pichai, «How does that show up on a 7-year-old's iPhone who's playing a kids game?» Now what Google has to do with an iPhone is beyond me, but just a suggestion to Rep. King, if you do not want your seven-year-old granddaughter to see bad things about you, maybe be a less shitty person.

Progressives: Be careful of the comfort of placating the privileged at the expense of the afflicted

Most Americans are nonconfrontational. Ironically, many times they predicate their opinions based on the verbiage of those who are the most vocal. When one polls Americans about their value set, they are decidedly progressive. They believe in social, criminal, economic, and racial justice as concepts. Why? Because deep down they know it is right and they are able to empathize with abstract concepts. Interestingly, at times actualizing all those good values Americans believe in, we find ourselves in conflict with reality, history, and individual courage. There are many reasons for that. One primary reason that encompasses them all, however, is the inability of many to empathize unabashedly. I received very upsetting emails from two friends in a particular organization this week who would want progressives to temper their speech because it makes some uncomfortable. This discomfort they say detracts from the ability to bring these people into the fold. The question is; if one must tell less than the truth to bring some into the fold, what good is having them in the first place? Isn't said lukewarm entry a revelation of a sign of unreliability? I immediately remembered a quote from a letter Martin Luther King wrote as he spent time in a Birmingham jail. The issue is much more profound today. Replace the words “white moderate” with “some progressives.”

Maison Vivienne Opens Manhattan-Based Flagship Restaurant

Maison Vivienne recently announced the opening of its elegantly modern Manhattan-based flagship restaurant located at 116 East 60th Street on the Upper East Side. Maison Vivienne, which has a second location designed to cater to guests who frequent Southampton, offers a contemporary interpretation of French Provencal Mediterranean classics, all created with sustainable and local ingredients, as per a PR Newswire release.“Residing in a traditional townhouse property, the 4,000 square-foot space can seat up to 160 guests at any given time. Featuring an inviting long bar at street level, the design created by Paris K Studio, draws inspiration from the historic building through the use of the remarkable floor to ceiling fireplace, original hardwood flooring, and subtle dove grey wall colorings. Breitling Announces Navitimer Aviator 8 Swiss Limited-Edition Timepieces

After starting its partnership with Swiss International Airlines in 2016, Breitling has functioned as its official timekeeper. To celebrate its ongoing partnership with the airlines, the luxury watch manufacturer based in Grenchen, Switzerland, has released two new timepieces in the form of the Navitimer Aviator 8 B01 SWISS and the Navitimer Aviator 8 Automatic Swiss. Both the watches importantly carry on the company’s dedication to wrist chronographs for pilots, which was the focus of the Huit Aviation Department created by Willy Breitling in 1938.The Navitimer Aviator 8 B01 Chronograph 43 SWISS Limited-Edition comes with the Manufacture Caliber 01, which is created in-house by the company and it provides a power reserve of 70 hours. With an aircraft-shaped base on the central chronograph second hand, the watch is a COSC-certified chronometer. It has a 43-mm case in stainless steel and a black dial, which features small-seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph subdials. The company is set to produce 777 pieces of the watch, which is a tribute to the Boeing 777 airliner operated by SWISS airlines. In the Navitimer Aviator 8 Automatic SWISS Limited-Edition, the Breitling Caliber 17 runs the show and has a power reserve of 40 hours. A black dial is present on the 41mm watch and the hour and minute hands are coated with Super-LumiNova, which emits a luminescent glow. The case back features an engraving of a turbine engine and the sweep-second hand has a jetliner base.
