Successful impeachment doesn't necessarily mean a Senate conviction—it means Trump's 2020 ouster

Ever since Donald Trump put the U.S. presidency up for sale last week, a fierce impeachment debate among Democrats has begun anew. Support for beginning an impeachment inquiry is growing in the House Democratic caucus just as it is growing within the electorate. On Monday, freshman California Rep. Katie Porter nudged the caucus to just shy of 70 members in support of initiating proceedings, saying that she had not reached her decision easily.  «I didn't come to Congress to impeach the president,» Porter said in a video statement, ticking through a list of constituent priorities she still hoped to accomplish. «But when faced with a crisis of this magnitude, I cannot with a clean conscience ignore my duty to defend the Constitution.» Porter, who in 2018 unseated a two-term GOP congresswoman in conservative Orange County, is exactly the type of newly elected Democrat that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is supposedly trying to insulate by serving as a human bulwark against impeachment. Porter’s bare-bones but thoughtful video laying out the reasoning behind her decision won't garner any awards for production quality, and yet it had racked up nearly 1.5 million views within in its first 24 hours online. Porter pushed the conversation forward by delivering a clear explanation for why beginning an impeachment inquiry into Trump was a necessary step toward safeguarding the integrity of our democracy. For her, it was a duty she could no longer ignore. The Democratic voters who remain most acutely opposed to initiating impeachment proceedings usually make one of two arguments: 1) duty aside, impeaching Donald Trump is useless since the GOP-led Senate will never convict and therefore Trump will remain in office; 2) impeaching Trump is a political trap that will backfire in 2020. Neither of those arguments is inherently true and, in fact, they are inextricably linked. Indeed, failing to make the depth and breadth of Trump's malfeasance crystal-clear to the American people through a concerted and targeted impeachment inquiry will hamstring Democrats' electoral chances in 2020.  But the main fallacy of this argument is the notion that conducting an impeachment investigation is entirely useless if it doesn't end in a Senate conviction. Critics of impeachment routinely argue that those pushing for impeachment are simply indulging in pure "fantasy” because Republicans will immediately kill the entire effort in the Senate. But the emphasis on a successful Senate conviction misses the point of launching impeachment proceedings entirely. The impeachment process is exactly that—a process. It's an opportunity for Democrats to alert the American public that, Hey, something important is going on here and we all need to pay attention to it. It's a chance to educate voters and highlight Trump's moral and intellectual unfitness for the office that has been entrusted to him. That way, if House Democrats vote to impeach and Senate Republicans back Trump, voters will be armed with the information they need to finish the job themselves next year.

Nancy Pelosi agrees to view 'less redacted' Mueller report, says she feels 'no pressure' to impeach

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has agreed to review a version of the special counsel’s report that was first prepared by Attorney General William Barr in April. Until now, Democrats have refused to view this version because the offer came with too many restrictions. However, after reaching agreement with Barr on seeing more underlying evidence, Pelosi has decided she wants to see the somewhat less marked up report. And, as she goes to view the report, the speaker declared that she feels “no pressure” to begin an impeachment inquiry. Right now, there is a redacted version of the report from former special counsel Robert Mueller, there is an unredacted version that is only available to William Barr, Donald Trump, and maybe Sean Hannity, and there’s a “less redacted” version. In April, Barr offered up the version that he described as “minimally redacted” to Congress in an attempt to head off subpoenas, but Democrats—including Pelosi—rejected the offer because it came with enough strings to weave a rug. The report would only be for the viewing of a handful of representatives and senators in the leadership, they wouldn’t be allowed to take notes about what they saw, and all the differences between the version visible to the public and the version the leadership team was allowed to glimpse would remain strictly confidential. It was an offer that seemed more like taunting “we’ll let you have a peek, but you can’t say anything or do anything about it” than it did a legitimate attempt at finding a compromise on the issue. Barr’s offer was widely and soundly rejected as House committees continued the effort to secure the entire report. But as Politico reports, Pelosi has now decided she will view the previously prepared version of the report, even though the restrictions on its viewing remain in place. This comes after the House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler reached an agreement with Barr to view some of the report’s underlying evidence in exchange for backing off criminal contempt action against the attorney general. Meanwhile, Pelosi says she feels “no pressure” to bring an impeachment, even as more Democrats announce their support for such an action.

Grizzlies trade Mike Conley to Jazz in blockbuster deal

The Grizzlies and Jazz have reached an agreement on a trade that will send standout point guard Mike Conley to Utah, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link) and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Chris Herrington of The Daily Memphian provides the full details on those protections. The deal will be completed once the new league year begins in July for cap reasons, according to Wojnarowski and ESPN’s Bobby Marks (via Twitter). The Jazz will have to absorb Conley using their newly opened cap room but won’t have to waive Derrick Favors‘ non-guaranteed contract to make the deal work, Marks notes (via Twitter). It’s a huge acquisition for the Jazz, who will pair Conley with Donovan Mitchell in their backcourt, with Favors and Rudy Gobert up front and Joe Ingles providing floor spacing on the wing. Conley, 31, is coming off perhaps the best season of his NBA career, averaging a career-high 21.1 PPG to go along with 6.4 APG, 3.4 RPG, 1.3 SPG and a .438/.364/.845 shooting line. Utah reportedly tried to land C
