Mississippi Republican has a 'great idea': Making it harder for 'liberal folks' to vote

Fresh off of “joking” about public hangings while running against a black man in Mississippi, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith is now saying she was also joking when she suggested it should be harder for liberal people to vote—something that’s still relevant for 2018 in Mississippi because Hyde-Smith is in a run-off election with Democrat Mike Espy. A video tweeted Thursday afternoon shows Hyde-Smith telling a small crowd in Starkville, Miss., that “they remind me that there’s a lot of liberal folks in those other schools who maybe we don’t want to vote. Maybe we want to make it just a little more difficult. And I think that’s a great idea." Some jokes, of course, tell us a lot about the people making them. Such as that they have no meaningful sense of humor except when it’s mean-spirited and that they think “hey, I was joking” is the best defense every time they get caught being a little too truthful. It would also sound a lot more plausible as a joke if keeping liberal people—like college students, as in this example, or people of color—from voting wasn’t a key Republican electoral strategy that they’ve been putting in place everywhere they can. “Let’s do a little more of the thing we’re already doing” does not really play as a joke, even if you wink and say “ha ha ha” at the same time. Whether it’s giving college areas or areas with lots of people of color fewer early or Election Day voting locations, making it harder to register to vote, long lines at polling locations where probable Democrats will vote … Republicans have been enthusiastically pursuing it. Which means that if we believe Hyde-Smith was joking, the humor came not from the improbability of what she was suggesting, but from the fact that it already happened. And that brings us full circle to how some people have no sense of humor outside of the mean-spirited and think “I was joking” is a solid defense to any appalling thing they say. Cindy Hyde-Smith to a T. The Mississippi Senate run-off is November 27. Make calls for Democrat Mike Espy! Don't want to make calls? You can join a text-banking team for Espy.

Morning Digest: Democrats flip Maine House seat in country's first instant-runoff congressional race

The Daily Kos Elections Morning Digest is compiled by David Nir, Jeff Singer, Stephen Wolf, and Carolyn Fiddler, with additional contributions from David Jarman, Steve Singiser, Daniel Donner, James Lambert, David Beard, and Arjun Jaikumar. Leading Off ● ME-02: Election officials in Maine tabulated the results of the country's first-ever instant runoff for Congress on Thursday, determining that Democrat Jared Golden defeated Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin by a narrow 50.5-49.5 margin after the second-choice preferences of voters who cast ballots for two third-party candidates were taken into account. Poliquin had led 46.4 to 45.5 on the initial balloting, but 65 percent of those who voted for independents Tiffany Bond and Will Hoar elected to mark a second choice. That group overwhelmingly transferred their votes to Golden, who won second-choice ballots by a 69-31 margin, allowing him to edge ahead of Poliquin. Campaign Action Golden, a Marine veteran who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, gives House Democrats their 37th flip this cycle, with four races still uncalled at press time. This race saw heavy spending, but Golden prevailed even though northern Maine's rural 2nd District veered sharply away from Democrats in 2016, voting for Donald Trump 51-41 after supporting Barack Obama 53-44 four years earlier. Remarkably, that makes Poliquin the first incumbent to lose this seat since 1916. Of course, the soon-to-be-ex-congressman is extremely bitter about this turn of events, even though Mainers twice voted to require runoffs in such races, and all candidates participated in this election knowing the system they'd be operating under. Nevertheless, Poliquin waited until after Election Day to file a lawsuit challenging the system, but just ahead of the tabulation on Thursday, the judge hearing the case, Lance Walker, sharply rejected Poliquin's request for a restraining order to block the instant runoff and declare him the winner. Walker specifically noted that Poliquin's position would deprive all of Bond's and Hoar's voters of what they understood to be their right to be counted—that is, their right to be able to cast a second-choice ballot and have that tallied if their first-choice candidates were knocked out. Walker concluded by saying that Poliquin's remedy does not lie with the courts but rather would be «to petition the political branch to change the law»—in other words, call your congressman. Poliquin says he plans to forge ahead with his challenge regardless, but if legal norms hold, his odds of success look poor. Of course, that's a big «if» nowadays, given the makeup of the Supreme Court, but it's worth noting that Walker is a Trump appointee.

Cartoon: Fight the victims

x Vimeo Video With the deadly fires in California still burning and hundreds of people missing in the area that was once the town of Paradise, President Trump thought it would be a good idea to blame the fires on his favorite punching bag state. Tweeting that “there is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires,” Trump blamed the fires on California. Firefighting organizations quickly pushed back against the president, not that that will keep him from lying and making up his own facts. (Although it did seem to get him to hand over some disaster aid.) It’s not just Trump who blames the increase in wildfires on lefty foes, Interior Secretary Zinke has blamed “environmental terrorists” for the rise in megafires. Just blame the other tribe instead of generations of fire suppression and (gasp!) climate change. It’s a pretty simple formula that plays well with the base. Unfortunately, it does nothing to help fight the raging fires or help the victims. Here’s how you can help people impacted by the fires.

New RBI window for NBFCs unlikely to improve their credit: Report

The partial credit enhancement (PCE)facility by the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) for non-bank lenders is unlikely to have the desired impact of increasing credit flow to the troubled sector, a report said Friday. On November 2, RBI had allowed banks to provide PCE for debt raised by non-deposit-taking systematically important non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and housing finance companies (HFCs). «The issuance volumes for NBFCs/HFCs under the PCE framework are likely to remain muted,» domestic rating agency Icra said in the note. Credit enhancement is a tool typically aimed at improving credit worthiness of a borrower, in this case the NBFCs. The RBI move came amid a strong pitch for many, including its central board members, to increase the credit supply to the troubled sector. NBFCs and HFCs are facing a crisis of confidence following the default by IL&FS since late-August, which led to its takeover by the government last month. This in turn led to a ...
