84 days past judge's deadline, migrant families torn apart at the border remain separated

Campaign Action 84 days past a federal judge’s reunification order, 66 children kidnapped from their parents at the border continue to remain under U.S. custody, according to numbers released this week by the administration. One of these 66 children is aged 5 or under. Of the 66 kids, the parents of 50 have already been deported. Trump officials have struggled to reunite children with deported parents because of their own cruelty, after having torn apart families with no plan set in place on how to reunite them. Now, as 66 kids remain separated, Donald Trump is floating officially reviving family separation, both as an election strategy to rile up his base, and because White House aide and white supremacist Stephen Miller likes it. But even kids who are being moved for reunification continue to be traumatized. Earlier this month, officials returned a 4-year-old to her home country without first informing her parents. “When Karla, a pseudonym HuffPost is using to protect the child’s identity, arrived in Guatemala, no one came to pick her up at a reunification center near the airport.” Karla ended up spending yet another unnecessary night “in a government-run shelter.” So who has been held accountable for this cruelty? Not one high-level official. Trump’s administration “is still inflicting intentional harm on children it separated from their parents, many of whom have yet to be reunited,” tweeted U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon. “Trump is now talking about resuming child snatching. They're unable and unwilling to fix this mess. But we can fix it. November is coming.” GET OUT THE VOTE for Democrats to hold officials accountable. Just click here, enter your zip code, choose the event that works best for you, and RSVP to attend. Don't let up the pressure. Can you give $1 to Beto O’Rourke and other Daily Kos-endorsed candidates for Senate and House?

Donald Trump wants you to pretend he's on the ballot this November

Donald Trump is asking voters to pretend he is on the ballot this November—at least until Republicans lose, at which point he’ll deny having had anything to do with it. Trump is ramping up his schedule of campaign rallies, the Washington Post reports, and he has been crystal clear about how he sees the situation: “I’m not on the ticket, but I am on the ticket, because this is also a referendum about me,” Trump boomed this month at a rally in Southaven, Miss. “I want you to vote. Pretend I’m on the ballot.” But that said, Trump has no intention of thinking that potential Republican losses are a referendum about himself. Asked by the Associated Press if he would “bear some responsibility” if Republicans lose the House, Trump responded “No, I think I’m helping people.” He then pointed to the successes of candidates he’s endorsed in Republican primaries (as if primaries and general elections are the same thing), moved on to his campaign crowds in 2016, and laid the groundwork to say that losses won’t be about him: And I’m not running. I mean, there are many people that have said to me, ‘Sir, I will never ever,’ you on the trail when I’m talking to people backstage etcetera, ‘I will never ever go and vote in the midterms because you’re not running and I don’t think you like Congress.’  The likelihood that Trump is having detailed conversations with a lot of people who don’t plan to vote in the midterms—that these are the people who local Republicans are putting in rooms with him when he shows up for rallies that are ostensibly campaign events for congressional candidates—is … low. But that lie is the best lie he’s got, the insistence that if Republicans lose it has nothing to do with Donald Trump being unpopular and everything to do with voters failing to understand what Donald Trump wanted them to do. Whatever Trump is going to claim on November 7, though, for now, the important thing is to remember that this is also a referendum about him. Pretend he’s on the ballot. GET OUT THE VOTE for Democrats. Just click here, enter your zip code, choose the event that works best for you, and RSVP to attend. Double your impact: Can you give $1 to help these great candidates get to Congress?

Report: Jimmy Butler trade talks 'mostly dormant' for now

With the 2018-19 season officially underway, the Jimmy Butler trade talks that were so active in the weeks leading up to opening night are “mostly dormant” for the time being, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic. The Heat were the most aggressive suitor for Butler during the preseason, having nearly reached a deal with the Timberwolves that would have sent Josh Richardson, Dion Waiters, and a protected first-round pick to Minnesota for the All-NBA swingman. However, according to Charania, Heat president Pat Riley informed his players a few days before the regular season began that the club planned to stick with its current roster for now. While the Timberwolves aren’t close to any deals involving Butler at the moment, trade discussions figure to pick back up at some point. Team owner Glen Taylor confirmed earlier this week that he and the 29-year-old reached an understanding — Butler will play hard for the Wolves while the team continues to seek out a trade package for him. If and when those trade talks r
