Law enforcement whistleblower released info about Michael Cohen's slush fund

The New Yorker just broke a story reporting that much of the information news outlets reported last week about Michael Cohen's pay-to-play scheme came from a law enforcement whistleblower who worried a cover up might be under way. That suspicion began when

Trump's pick for California governor race says DMV is 'worse' than 'the Holocaust'

California businessman and Trump-endorsed GOP candidate for California’s gubernatorial race, John Cox is in some deep doo doo. Thursday Cox made some doo doo remarks during a campaign stop to a California DMV, as reported by Capital Public Radio.  “You know, I met a Holocaust survivor in Long Beach. He survived concentration camps, and he said this was worse. He’s 90 years old and he had to wait four hours down in Long Beach. Can you imagine that?” Cox says. Cox was trying to play an everyman of sorts, and do what Republicans and fascists have always done, tell the “common folks,” that they will “make the trains run on time.” Cox is running against Democrat Gavin Newsome and this won’t help. Cox’s campaign made sure to explain that while John Cox said that the lines at the DMV were worse than the lines to (maybe?) concentration camps, he wasn’t saying that the Holocaust was worse than the DMV. “John isn’t saying it was worse than the Holocaust. The guy didn’t say it was worse than the Holocaust,” [Campaign spokesman Matt] Shupe said. “He was saying that it reminded him of pre-war Germany” when Jews had to wait in lines to be processed.” “In no way does he mean this as a slight to the Jewish community,” Shupe added. “He misspoke. It’s very unfortunate. But it’s nothing more than that.” Yup. We all know he probably didn’t actually mean to come across the way he came across, but you’re running for goddamn governor of the fifth or six largest economy of the world, man! Also, Trump endorsing you, and you accepting that endorsement means, by definition, that you are complicit in not only treason, but are complicit in racist and anti-Semitic sentiments and behaviors.

It seems though, that the design staff over at Fox News is the most shaken by this news. The Huffington Post’s Philip Lewis tweeted out a screenshot of Fox News’s announcement of Aretha’s passing, with the memorial image they solemnly flashed. xUmm, is that Patti LaBelle in the corner? pic.twitter.com/PmUPpgc0zb— Philip Lewis (@Phil_Lewis_) August 16, 2018 Yes. The woman singing in the background is famed singer Patti LaBelle. Listen, this would be deemed an “honest mistake” if there was anything “honest” about Fox News or if they weren’t one of the most bigoted organizations in the world. xRest in peace Aretha. ❤ pic.twitter.com/QT7HeY5SIf— Patti LaBelle (@MsPattiPatti) August 16, 2018 Someone quickly put up the clip.

LePage refusing to implement voter-passed Medicaid expansion because he's a bitter spiteful crank

Do we even have laws anymore? It hardly matters what voters vote for if Republican politicians are simply going to ignore the laws they pass out of spite. The LePage administration is rejecting applications for Medicaid from people who became newly eligible for the program under an expansion approved by voters last fall, according to documents and a progressive advocacy group that is suing the state. Maine's LePage is a prime example of a law-averse crackpot politician who in better times would have been run out of town on a rail by better people; in this case his administration has simply decided that no matter what measures voters approve they're going to ignore it. Right now LePage and allies are appealing a court decision requiring them to Follow The Damn Law, an effort that appears to be nothing more than an effort to delay an inevitable outcome but, what the hell, maybe LePage can kill off some of Mainers in the meantime. Can't win lawsuits against him if you're dead, right? About 70,000 Mainers would be eligible for Medicaid under expansion, including low-income childless adults and parents who were previously ineligible for coverage. I don't have it in me to argue the fine points of this one, because there really aren't any fine points worth arguing. The voters of Maine passed an expansion of Medicaid via the ballot box after LePage vetoed a legislative effort to do the same. LePage is refusing to implement it because he's a half-senile old crank who spends far more time pursuing personal vendettas against other elected officials and against everyday Maine citizens than he spends doing his actual job. This is all going to play out in court yet again, LePage is going to lose again, and for some reason America is going to refuse to fire him into the Atlantic Ocean via circus cannon when he does. In the meantime LePage's actions mean individual Maine citizens are going to suffer physical harm that they would not have suffered if the man wasn't a revenge-focused law-flouting pile of crap. There, there's your serious pundit takeaway. You won't hear that in the New York Times because they're too busy interviewing America’s dumbest diner patrons about why rank corruption and repurposed fascist slogans are Good Now.

Donald Trump's favorite lie: All my invisible friends think I am doing super-great

The «president» of the United States is such a shameless liar that there is now an entire media beat dedicated to individual sub-categories of his lies. Among his more predictable tics: the famous I have a girlfriend in Canada, but you wouldn't know her routine. He wants everyone to know that he just talked to a guy who talked to a guy who is just so damn supportive of everything Trump is doing but, um, you wouldn't know him. The name isn't important, after all. Or the company. Or whether or not Donald can only see him after doing three lines of cocaine. Bloomberg is the latest outlet to chronicle some of Donald's imaginary friends. Each of them is a variation of, well, this. “I was with one of the greatest companies in the world. The chief executive officer. Very short while ago. And it really affects him,” Trump said at a July 31 campaign rally in Tampa, referring to his controversial use of tariffs. “He said ‘You know what, this does affect our company. But, Mr. President, keep going. You’re doing the right thing.”’ Trump didn’t identify his supporter, and the White House won’t say who it is. I DO TOO HAVE FRIENDS. THEY ARE SUPER SMART AND HAVE LOTS OF MONEY AND THEY THINK I'M A GENIUS. ONE OF THEM RIDES A UNICYCLE TO WORK EVERY DAY. I SAID TO HIM, I SAID WHY DO YOU DO THAT, AND HE SAID IT'S BECAUSE THE ECONOMY IS SO STRONG HE ONLY NEEDS ONE WHEEL NOW, THANKS TO ME. TRUE STORY. It's pathetic, obviously. It's a symptom of Trump's impulsiveness and uncontrollable narcissism, and is a close relative of his rally claims that, no matter where he was or how large or small the venue is, there are always «thousands» of people stranded outside, unable to get in, but don't worry because the imaginary crowds outside are watching him on imaginary giant televisions installed just outside the venue. He is incapable of functioning without these lies. He couldn't do it. The notion that he is the greatest person ever, and that he is surrounded by invisible people who recognize that greatness no matter what the rest of you louder, more optically opaque people think, is central to his identity. He's out of his gourd, is what I'm trying to say. Totally off his rocker. But this, at least, is a subcategory of his lies that probably isn't going to get us all killed.

Brett Kavanaugh dissent shows how far he'll go to side with the boss over workers

It’s starting to look like a requirement of being nominated to the Supreme Court by Donald Trump is having at least one gratuitously, ludicrously anti-worker dissent in your record. Neil Gorsuch had the frozen trucker, and as for Brett Kavanaugh, Dave Jamieson offers a candidate. Kavanaugh was the lone dissenter on a case in which a company was found to have created a spin-off company solely for the purpose of busting its union. In the case, Island Architectural Woodwork, a unionized company, created Verde Demountable Partitions, which was non-union. Verde operated from an Island-owned building, used the same equipment, and was run by the daughter of Island’s chief executive. It was a thin fiction: According to court filings, Island provided Verde with free equipment and rent but didn’t even bother to document its dealings with the supposedly separate company until after it was subpoenaed.   As the appellate court later noted, “Island made no formal valuations of its assets before handing them off to Verde” ― an unusual move if the two companies were disconnected as they claimed. On top of all that, Island’s president, Edward Rufrano, tried to make it a condition of a new contract for Island’s workers that their union sign away its right to organize the Verde workers. But to Kavanaugh, this wasn’t enough to show that Verde existed to avoid worker organizing: “The Board … seems to have found something shady in the fact that Verde was started and primarily owned by two daughters of Island’s primary owner,” Kavanaugh wrote, making it clear he saw no such shadiness. What would make Kavanaugh see something done by a business owner as shady?

Manafort update: Jury asks for four clarifications, deliberations to continue Friday

After deliberating for some seven hours Thursday, the jury in the ongoing fraud trial of former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort submitted four clarification questions to U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III. xThe jury has proposed these 4 questions: Q: Is one required to file an FBAR if they own less than 50% of the company and no signatory authority?Q: Define «shelf company»?Q: Can you redefine reasonable doubt?Q: Can the exhibit list be amended to include the indictment? https://t.co/CXfriveti7— Tom Winter (@Tom_Winter) August 16, 2018 Those questions relate to four specific counts of the 18 overall Manafort was charged with, according to Politico. The «reasonable doubt» question is a common question from jurors since that is the bar they are using to decide someone's guilt. Here's what Judge Ellis told them: «The government is not required to prove beyond 'all possible doubt,' just doubt that can be reasoned.» Ellis also provided an answer on the question related to an FBAR (foreign bank account report) by reading back jury instruction #53: «A person is an owner of record (Owner of FBAR) if a person is acting on behalf of a US person with access and control of the account, OR if a US person who owned more than 50% of company.» The question matters because the defense argued that prosecutors hadn’t proven Manafort had to file an FBAR on several of his overseas accounts, which were under the names of corporate entities in Cyprus. Instead, Manafort’s attorneys said his consulting firm should have filed the reports and that for three of the four charged years, he only owned 50 percent of the accounts while his wife owned the other half, per Rachel Weiner of the Washington Post. Overall, the judge wasn't super helpful, telling the jury to instead rely on their collective notes and memories entirely for the other two questions.

New CRISPR technique skips over portions of genes that can cause disease

In a new study in cells, researchers have adapted CRISPR gene-editing technology to cause the cell's internal machinery to skip over a small portion of a gene when transcribing it into a template for protein building. Such targeted editing could one day be useful for treating genetic diseases caused by mutations in the genome, such as Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, Huntington's disease or some cancers.
